Orioles answer back, trail 3-2 (Matusz done)

Wade Davis didn't want Brian Matusz to have all the frustration. Davis gave up back-to-back home runs to Adam Jones and Vladimir Guerrero in the bottom of the first inning, reducing Tampa Bay's lead to 3-2. Jones has nine homers to trail team-leader Mark Reynolds by three. Guerrero has six, the most recent coming May 22 against Washington. The Orioles also hit back-to-back homers on April 27 in Boston. Jones followed Luke Scott's blast that night. Meanwhile, Matusz has walked the first two batters in the second inning. Johnny Damon was thrown out trying to steal, though replays showed he was safe. Alfredo Simon is warming in the bullpen. Looks like we'll see him soon. This is why manager Buck Showalter held Simon out of last night's game. He knew that Chris Jakubauskas would start Tuesday night in Toronto, and he needed Simon as a potential long reliever today. Instant update: Matusz turns in the second-shortest outing of his career, and the shortest that didn't involve him being hit by a line drive. He lasted one inning in a Sept. 13, 2010 start in Toronto. Matusz allowed five hits and walked four in 1 1/3 innings today. Three runs were on the board and the bases were loaded when he left. The only out in the second inning came when Johnny Damon was thrown out trying to steal second after a leadoff walk. Replays showed he was safe. B.J. Upton's sacrifice fly off Simon left Matusz with a fourth earned run. The dip in velocity remains a concern. I saw one fastball clocked at 84 mph.
