The Orioles made room for left-hander J.C. Romero on their 40-man roster today by designating reliever Miguel Socolovich for assignment.
Socolovich posted a 1.90 ERA in 28 games at Triple-A Norfolk and was named to the International League All-Star team. However, he registered a 6.97 ERA in six appearances and 10 1/3 innings with the Orioles during two stints with the club.
The Orioles will outright Socolovich to Norfolk if he clears waivers.
The Orioles also made Steve Johnson's promotion official. Johnson has joined the Orioles for the third time this season and is expected to start Saturday night against the Tigers in Detroit.
Tommy Hunter is listed as Friday night's starter, though it's conceivable that he swaps places with Johnson.
Romero will wear No. 48.
NOTE: The Orioles are promoting pitcher Kevin Gausman to Single-A Frederick.
Gausman, the fourth-overall pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of LSU, has allowed one hit in six scoreless innings at short-season Single-A Aberdeen. He's walked none and struck out five in his two starts.
John Stockstill, the Orioles' director of player development, announced on O's Xtra on MASN that Gausman was moving up two levels. Stockstill indicated that Gausman will start Saturday, but executive vice president Dan Duquette said the right-hander could make his Carolina League debut on Friday against Winston-Salem at Harry Grove Stadium.
