Orioles fall behind in 11th (O's lose 4-3 in 11 innings)

The Orioles made two outs at the plate in the bottom of the 10th inning tonight and fell behind in the top of the 11th. You could almost see it coming. Evan Meek, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Norfolk earlier today, allowed an RBI single to pinch-hitter Stephen Vogt with one out to give Oakland a 4-3 lead. Vogt poked his single into left field after shortstop J.J. Hardy committed his fourth error in the last two nights, mishandling Alberto Callaspo's grounder. Hardy glanced at John Jaso going to third, which caused the miscue. Jaso doubled to lead off the inning. Meek allowed nine earned runs in his last four appearances with the Orioles over 2 1/3 innings before rejoining the club this afternoon. Tonight's run is unearned. The Orioles had a chance to win it in the 10th. Actually, two chances. Nick Markakis singled off left-hander Fernando Abad leading off the inning and moved to second on Manny Machado's sacrifice bunt. Nelson Cruz was walked intentionally, and Adam Jones singled into right field. Brandon Moss was playing shallow and he threw out Markakis at the plate - a call that was upheld upon review. Cruz took third base on the plate, and he broke for home with a 2-2 count on Chris Davis. A straight steal of home. And he was an easy out. Lots to second-guess here. The decision to send Markakis rather than have the bases loaded with one out. Cruz's decision to break for the plate. Update: Sean Doolittle struck out the side in the bottom of the 11th, and the Orioles lost 4-3 at Camden Yards. The Orioles are 30-29 on the season, 5-3 in extras and 12-9 in one-run games.
