The Orioles' 10-game homestand starts with a frustrating loss - one that saw two Orioles cut down at the plate in the last of the 10th followed by Oakland scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th.
The A's beat the O's 4-3 in 11 innings tonight in the hotly contested game in front of 28,076 at Camden Yards.
The Orioles fall to 11-13 at home and 30-29 for the season. They fall to 6 1/2 games back of first-place Toronto, who won again tonight.
In the last of the 10th, the Orioles came close to winning this game. With runners on first and second and one out, Adam Jones singled to right but Nick Markakis was thrown out at the plate. Then, with two outs and runners on first and third, Nelson Cruz was caught trying to steal home. He got a big lead with the infield shifting against Chris Davis, but Fernando Abad kept his poise, didn't balk and threw to home to get Cruz. It was one frustrating half-inning for the Orioles.
In the top of the 11th, John Jaso led off the inning with a pinch-hit double off Evan Meek, who was recalled from the minors today. Jaso went to third on J.J. Hardy's error, his fourth in two games. He scored on a pinch-hit single by Stephen Vogt.
Earlier, the A's had taken a 2-0 lead on solo homers by Josh Donaldson in the first inning and Derek Norris in the second.
The O's came up with three straight two-out singles, the last by Jonathan Schoop, to get on the board against Tommy Milone in the second. Davis' solo homer made it 2-2 in the fourth. Manny Machado's solo homer put the O's ahead 3-2 in the fifth. It stayed that way until the eighth when a Yoenis Cespedes RBI double tied it again.
Wei-Yin Chen pitched a solid game in a no-decision. Over 6 1/3 innings, he gave up five hits and two runs with no walks and four strikeouts. Chen threw 102 pitches and now has a career 1.00 ERA in four starts against the A's.
It was a frustrating start to the homestand for the Orioles. It was yet another win for the A's, who are now 38-23, and have the best record in the AL. They are 19-8 in their last 27 games.
