With less than 24 hours remaining before the non-waiver trade deadline, the Orioles are in serious discussions with the Brewers regarding outfielder Gerardo Parra and the Phillies regarding outfielder Ben Revere, according to industry sources.
Parra, 28, extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games earlier tonight. He was batting .326/.367/.517 with 24 doubles, five triples, nine home runs and 31 RBIs in 99 games.
Parra, a two-time Gold Glove winner with the Diamondbacks and a career .279/.330/.407 hitter in seven major league seasons, is a pending free agent.
Parra plays all three outfield positions, with most of his appearances coming in left field.
Revere, 27, is under team control until 2018. He's batting .298/.335/.376 with 13 doubles, six triples, a home run and 26 RBIs in 95 games. He's also stolen 24 bases in 29 attempts and could move into the leadoff spot.
Revere is a career .292/ .326/.345 hitter in parts of six major league seasons. He also plays all three outfield positions, though most of his appearances have come in center.
Triple-A Norfolk right-hander Zach Davies has been the focus of a possible deal, according to a source. He's 5-6 with a 2.84 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) with the Tides.
Davies likely would have to be part of a package for Parra.
Parra and Revere bat from the left side.
The Orioles would consider acquiring both players and flipping one in a deal for a pitcher, though it's considered a long-shot.
It's still evident that the Orioles are trying hard for an outfielder. They won't part with Kevin Gausman, as I've written, and prefer to hold onto Double-A Bowie reliever Mychal Givens.
I'd expect the Orioles to make at least one trade on Thursday. They also want to open up a roster spot, perhaps to bring up an optionable reliever.
Let's not forget that executive vice president Dan Duquette worked out a trade with the Brewers for reliever Francisco Rodriguez in July 2013. There's a history.
As for tonight's game, Chris Davis hit his 25th home run, a two-run shot in the sixth that reduced the Tigers' lead to 9-4.
Bud Norris has allowed four runs and six hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Update: The Tigers' bullpen is still bad.
Chris Davis had a two-run single off Shane Greene and pinch-hitter Matt Wieters followed with an RBI single to reduce Detroit's lead to 9-7 in the seventh inning.
Update II: The Orioles scored another run in the eighth as Tigers manager Brad Ausmus threatened to empty his bullpen. Manny Machado's bouncer to short plated Jonathan Schoop, who led off with a single.
Tigers 9, Orioles 8
Update III: The Tigers held on for a 9-8 win over the Orioles before 30,136 at Camden Yards.
The Orioles are 13-17 in one-run games and 16-20 in the first game of a series. Their winning streak is snapped at five games.
