The Orioles are going to make a change to their bullpen later today.
At least one.
Manager Brandon Hyde used eight relievers and a position player last night after Jimmy Yacabonis, who earned the title of "opener" because Tom Eshelman followed with 4 1/3 innings. Otherwise, it's just a bullpen game.
Well, it actually became both because the game stretched through 16 innings before the Orioles posted a 10-8 win.
Eshelman allowed only one run. He's a hero.
Gabriel Ynoa worked three scoreless innings and threw 33 pitches after tossing 28 the previous day in Arizona, but he's out of minor league options and would have to be designated for assignment.
Miguel Castro threw 28 pitches in 1 2/3 innings. He's also out of options.
Tanner Scott could be optioned again, the shuttle always parked out front, after throwing 30 pitches last night in the 15th inning and allowing three runs on two hits and three walks.
Yacabonis also is familiar with the shuttle, and he's a candidate after working the first two innings and logging 46 pitches.
The 40-man roster has an opening if the Orioles need it.
Evan Phillips is on the 40-man and he didn't pitch last night for Norfolk. He worked two innings the previous night and threw 36 pitches. Hunter Harvey followed starter David Hess last night and threw 26 pitches in two scoreless innings. Branden Kline threw 20 in one-third and was charged with four runs.
Tayler Scott hasn't been down for the minimum 10 days and can only be recalled if replacing an injured player.
Luis Ortiz is on the seven-day injured list. Josh Lucas, no longer on the 40-man, has pitched on back-to-back nights.
Double-A Bowie's Dillon Tate, moved to the bullpen, hasn't pitched since July 20. He's registered a 1.67 ERA and 0.85 WHIP with a .179 average against in 15 relief appearances over 27 innings.
According to STATS, the Orioles are the first team to squander a lead of three runs or more in the 15th inning and later and win since the Astros on Sept. 2, 1986 against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Stevie Wilkerson became the first position player to record a save in major league history. He's made three appearances on the mound this season, and whatever he's throwing is working.
Dr. Poo Poo strikes again.
Also per STATS, two American League position players have earned a win or a save in a game since 1969, and they're both Orioles. Wilkerson with the save last night and Chris Davis with the win on May 6, 2012 in Boston.
Meanwhile, Adley Rutschman is catching today in the Gulf Coast League after the previous day's game was postponed due to rain. He's still scheduled to join short-season Single-A Aberdeen on Saturday, though he might serve as the designated hitter after being behind the plate today.
