The Orioles are encouraging fans to bid on once in a lifetime auction opportunities via www.mlb.com/lungevity until 11:00 p.m. ET tonight, with proceeds going to the LUNGevity Foundation in memory of Orioles' late Public Relations Director Monica Barlow, who worked closely with the charity. Major League Baseball, MLB Advanced Media, MLB Network, and all 30 Clubs have organized a Winter Meetings charity auction featuring exclusive baseball experiences and items, including several Orioles-specific components, for the third consecutive year to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.
This year's auction includes the following Orioles-related items:
* A round of golf with Orioles Legend and Hall of Famer Jim Palmer and World Series MVP Rick Dempsey
* A 45-minute fielding lesson for a youth baseball team on the Oriole Park field with Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy and third base coach Bobby Dickerson
* A pre-game, on-field visit for four people and meet and greet with Orioles manager Buck Showalter and Vice President of Baseball Operations Brady Anderson, four tickets for that night's game on the Center Field Roof Deck, and the opportunity for one guest to accompany Showalter to home plate and present the lineup card
Inspired by the numerous employees, friends, and fans of the game who have been directly affected by cancer, the clubs' efforts have raised over $250,000 for Stand Up To Cancer in the first two years of the league-wide auction
LUNGevity Foundation is a non-profit firmly committed to making an immediate impact on increasing quality-of-life and survivorship of people with lung cancer by accelerating research into early detection and more effective treatments, as well as providing community, support, and education for all those affected by the disease.
Barlow was the Orioles Public Relations Director and a member of the organization for 14 years. She passed away in February of this year after a four and a half year battle with non-small cell lung cancer. Barlow was very active with the LUNGevity Foundation, raising funds through charity walks and awareness through media interviews.
