Orioles place Cabrera on disabled list (Paredes and Joseph homer)

NEW YORK - The Orioles have placed infielder Everth Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised left foot and activated shortstop J.J. Hardy.

Cabrera fouled a ball off his foot in the fifth inning last night at Citi Field, but he stayed in the game.

Infielder Rey Navarro would have been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk if Cabrera avoided the DL. Instead, he could be removed from the 25-man roster on Friday when infielder Ryan Flaherty is activated.

Navarro could serve as the backup shortstop tonight if Hardy is forced to leave the game.

Manager Buck Showalter talked earlier today about how much the club has missed Hardy.

"It's been a while, obviously," he said. "We missed the presence just as much, the ball security, the fundamentals, a lot of things that have been a challenge. We'll see.

"We've had situations, depth in the infield, relays, tags, coverage, bunt defenses, pickoffs, just some things. We're doing OK, but there just wasn't that feeling of sometimes everyone being on the same page."

Showalter stressed that Hardy is full-go and no longer restricted by soreness in his left shoulder.

"We wouldn't have brought him back if we thought that was a challenge," Showalter said. "We were not going to rush it. We could have done it earlier, but we want to get it all resolved in there. We felt we did. Regardless of what happens, it's still a different speed up here."

It may be a while before Hardy gets back his double play partner. The latest reports on second baseman Jonathan Schoop's recovery from a sprained right knee aren't encouraging.

"That's moving pretty slow," Showalter said. "They've had to aspirate it twice. You can't really start a lot of the rehab stuff they do until they get the fluid out of there. It's not discolored. That's what you worry about. It's not filling back up as quickly."

Showalter downplayed the soreness that catcher Matt Wieters has felt in his right triceps area.

"He's had soreness, which is normal," Showalter said. "That's normal and nothing that's been in one spot all the time that would be alarming. It's moved around. It's not as much as it was, and it's not often. It's very normal what goes on in this period. It's that last step that he's got to get over before he starts playing."

According to Elias, Chris Tillman has pitched more innings for Showalter (616â…“) than anyone except ex-Yankee Melido Perez.

Update: Jimmy Paredes homered with one out in the first inning to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead. He crushed a 97 mph fastball from Nathan Eovaldi, the eighth pitch of the at-bat.

Paredes has four home runs this season.

Update II: The Yankees scored twice off Chris Tillman in the bottom of the first on Alex Rodriguez's sacrifice fly and Mark Teixeira's RBI single.

Rodriguez was robbed of his 661st career home run on Delmon Young's leaping catch at the right field fence. Rodriguez would have passed Willie Mays for fourth on the all-time list.

Young threw out Teixeira trying to stretch his single into a double.

Update III: Caleb Joseph homered on a 94 mph fastball with one out in the third inning to tie the game 2-2.

Joseph was 1-for-13 and 3-for-18 in his last five games.
