The Orioles have placed pitcher Yovani Gallardo on the 15-day disabled list with "right shoulder bicep tendinitis," according to the team.
Gallardo's spot on the 25-man roster will be filled by reliever Brian Matusz, who comes off the disabled list.
Gallardo worked only two innings last night in Kansas City and threw 45 pitches before exiting the game. He flew back to Baltimore and underwent an examination from team orthopedist Dr. Michael Jacobs.
An MRI will be performed tomorrow. The bicep tendinitis is the team's preliminary diagnosis after an afternoon examination.
Gallardo allowed four runs last night and is 1-1 with a 7.00 ERA in four starts covering 18 innings. He signed a two-year contract that guarantees him $22 million on Feb. 25. The pact included a club option for 2018 after the Orioles restructured his three-year deal following his physical.
The Orioles held some concerns about the MRI results on Gallardo's shoulder, which delayed the announcement, and the sides worked out a new agreement.
Matusz didn't break camp with the team after appearing in only two exhibition games due to a strain in his lower back. He made five appearances on his injury rehab assignment and was stretched out to four innings in his last outing at Single-A Frederick.
The Orioles have another roster move pending with Kevin Gausman coming off the disabled list to make Monday night's start against the Rays at Tropicana Field.
Left-hander T.J. McFarland remains on the roster after tossing five scoreless innings last night in relief of Gallardo.
Update: Gallardo has made 30 or more starts in seven consecutive seasons. Durability hasn't been an issue.
Gallardo hadn't gone on the DL with an arm-related injury until today.
"Hopefully, (Gallardo) will respond to a period of rest and rehabilition and return to contribute to the team," said executive vice president Dan Duquette.
