Orioles recall Jason Garcia

The Orioles recalled right-hander Jason Garcia from Double-A Bowie today as Mike Wright's replacement in the bullpen and on the 25-man roster.

Wright was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk last night following a 9-5 loss to the Angels at Camden Yards.

Garcia, 23, is 4-7 with a 4.79 ERA in 15 starts with Bowie this season. Last year's Rule 5 pick has rejoined the Orioles for the first time in 2016.

jason garcia white.jpgGarcia made his major league debut on April 8, 2015 at Tropicana Field and went 1-0 with a 4.25 ERA in 21 games, allowing 14 earned runs and striking out 22 batters in 29 2/3 innings.

The Orioles returned Garcia to a starter's role this year after having him work out of the bullpen as a rookie. He's allowed 88 hits, walked 39 and struck out 40 in 77 innings. He's surrendered only four home runs.

By adding Garcia, the Orioles have another long reliever to possibly cover for their deficiencies in the rotation. His most recent outing came on Tuesday, when he gave up two earned runs in six innings against Trenton. He tossed six scoreless innings in three of four starts between June 4-25.

Because Garcia is on the 40-man roster, the Orioles won't need to make a corresponding move to create a spot.

The other 40-man choice today was right-hander David Hale, who's starting tonight at Triple-A Norfolk.
