Orioles recall Waddell (updated)

The Orioles made one bullpen swap today, recalling left-hander Brandon Waddell from Triple-A Norfolk and optioning Travis Lakins Sr. to the Tides.

Waddell, a waiver claim from the Twins, made his Norfolk debut Friday night and tossed a scoreless inning. He's wearing No. 49.

The bullpen is loaded with lefties now, including Paul Fry, Tanner Scott and Keegan Akin.

Waddell-Throws-Norfolk-Sidebar.jpgWaddell has pitched in six major league games over parts of the last two seasons and allowed six earned runs (seven total) and 12 hits in 7 1/3 innings. He's walked five batters.

"He hasn't pitched in a couple days, that's helpful right there," manager Brandon Hyde said in his Zoom call. "Threw an inning two days ago. Don't know much about him, to be honest with you. Watched his relief appearance in Norfolk. I know he's pitched in the big leagues with Minnesota. I watched a little bit of that. It's a low-90s fatsball, good slider. For him to be available is what we needed and hopefully he can get us some outs if needed."

Asked whether the Orioles considered bringing up multiple relievers, Hyde said, "I think we consider multiple moves every day. We consider a lot of things. But we're going with Brandon Waddell this afternoon."

Hyde also said Rule 5 pick Mac Sceroler threw three innings down in Sarasota, Fla. and will work four innings in his next appearance. He's nearing an injury-rehab assignment.

Lakins is 1-4 with a 7.36 ERA and 1.636 WHIP in 16 games. He had a 2.80 ERA and 1.481 WHIP last summer in 22 appearances.

Austin Hays is leading off and playing center field as the Orioles try to avoid back-to-back sweeps. Cedric Mullins is on the bench.

Ryan Mountcastle is in left field. His grand slam yesterday was the first recorded by an Orioles rookie since Ryan Flaherty on Sept. 28, 2012 against the Red Sox.

Freddy Galvis is batting second again. Anthony Santander remains in the cleanup spot.

Santander has an 11-game hitting streak against the Nationals dating back to July 17, 2019. He's 17-for-43 (.395) with four doubles, five home runs, 14 RBIs, three walks and 11 runs scored during that stretch.

Trey Mancini is batting .328 (20-for-61) with six home runs against left-handers. His six homers are tied for the most in the majors.

Matt Harvey has allowed 13 runs and 15 hits in his last two starts over six innings. His ERA has gone from 3.60 to 5.93.

Harvey has made 17 appearances (16 starts) against the Nationals and gone 3-7 with a 3.70 ERA and 1.253 WHIP in 97 1/3 innings. He owns a 4.91 ERA and 1.523 WHIP in eight starts in D.C.

Josh Harrison is 6-for-14 with a double. Ryan Zimmermann is 6-for-23 with a double and two home runs. Josh Bell is 4-for-15 with a home run.

Kyle Schwarber is 2-for-12 with five strikeouts.

The Orioles have lost five in a row and 12 of 14. Their 4.87 ERA is the fifth-highest in baseball and their 1.36 WHIP is eighth.

Their 225 runs allowed are tied with the Pirates for sixth-highest.

The Orioles have surrendered 67 home runs, tied with the Twins for most in the majors.

Nationals left-hander Patrick Corbin has a 6.10 ERA and 1.452 WHIP in eight starts. He's allowed 10 home runs in 41 1/3 innings.

A 10.47 ERA in April has been followed by a 3.24 ERA in four starts this month.

Left-handed hitters are slashing .206/.282/.235 and right-handers are batting .298/.370/.589.

Corbin is 0-2 with a 4.71 ERA and 1.143 WHIP in four career games (three starts) versus the Orioles. Galvis is 4-for-13 with two doubles and a triple. Pedro Severino is 3-for-8 with a double. Maikel Franco is 2-for-11 with a double and home run.

Trea Turner is 14-for-39 (.359) with four doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs, three walks and seven runs scored is his last nine games.

The Braves called up former Orioles reliever Jay Flaa this morning.
