The Orioles released infielder Everth Cabrera, who was designated for assignment on June 5 as one of six roster moves made in Cleveland.
Cabrera batted .208/.250/.229 in 29 games while filling in at shortstop and second base. The Orioles signed him to a $2.4 million contract on Feb. 25.
Cabrera had a minor league option when the Orioles signed him, but his service time kicked in toward the end of April. He couldn't be sent to the minors without his consent.
Manager Buck Showalter confirmed that Mike Wright will start Sunday's series finale against the Yankees unless he's used in relief tonight.
Left-hander Brian Matusz has rejoined the team and will come off the suspended list on Sunday, giving the Orioles a full 25-man roster. Matusz said he twice threw two innings in extended spring training games and also threw a bullpen session yesterday.
"We're hoping and confident that we're going to get a pretty sharp pitcher tomorrow," Showalter said.
Matusz chose his words carefully while discussing his eight-game suspension and Major League Baseball's failure to reduce it. I'll pass along his quotes in my next blog entry.
Dylan Bundy will undergo another MRI arthrogram on his right shoulder in the next few days. The Orioles are expecting it to confirm the previous diagnosis of tendinitis.
Pitcher Hunter Harvey remains shut down after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right forearm/elbow. He's been diagnosed with a strained right flexor mass.
Single-A Delmarva third baseman Jomar Reyes, regarded as one of the top position prospects in the organization, injured his thumb last night while diving for a ball and is undergoing an MRI. The Orioles are hoping it's only a sprain.
Reyes, 18, was batting .283/.343/.424 with 14 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 24 RBIs in 54 games.
Showalter said Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia is progressing well down in Sarasota after going on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis.
"I can see from the reports that he's progressing to the next level," Showalter said.
