Orioles reportedly on verge of acquiring Bourn (O's down 5-1)

The Orioles aren't finished with their attempts to improve their outfield depth.

The Orioles and Diamondbacks have agreed in principle to a trade involving veteran Michael Bourn, as first reported by MLB Network's Jon Heyman. Multiple reports had the sides in serious discussions.

The earlier waiver claim of outfielder Drew Stubbs didn't shift the Orioles' focus.

Bourn, 33, is batting .261/.307/.362 with 12 doubles, six triples, three home runs and 30 RBIs in 89 games with the Diamondbacks. Unlike Stubbs, he bats from the left side.

Bourn is a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner. He stole 61, 52 and 61 bases over a three-year period from 2009-2011.

Bourn is a career .266/.329/.356 hitter in 11 major league seasons with the Phillies, Astros, Braves (twice), Indians and Diamondbacks. He also plays all three outfield positions, the majority in center field.

Adam Jones remains day-to-day with a strained left hamstring. Joey Rickard may not return from the disabled list before mid-September.

Duquette and manager Buck Showalter wanted plus-defenders in the outfield, especially center field, and guys who can steal bases.

"Dan's had a lot of different irons in the fire over the last week or so," Showalter said. "It's kind of like the trade deadline. Everybody's got to show their hand."

Update: The talks regarding Bourn are "in process," according to a source.

Jose Bautista homered on Yovani Gallardo's first pitch to give Toronto a quick 1-0 lead. Russell Martin hit a two-run homer with two outs to increase the lead to 3-0. Gallardo threw 26 pitches in the inning.

Update II: The Orioles finally broke through in the fifth with an unearned run off Aaron Sanchez. Josh Donaldson booted Manny Machado's ground ball after back-to-back two-out singles by Hyun Soo Kim and Jonathan Schoop.

Kim gambled by going from first to third on a single into left field, and it paid off.

Chris Davis walked for the third time to load the bases, but Mark Trumbo flied to right.

Update III: Devon Travis' two-out double off Mychal Givens in the seventh scored Dioner Navarro and gave Toronto a 4-1 lead.

Gallardo retired the last 10 batters and gave the Orioles their third quality start in the series.

Update IV: Michael Saunders homered onto the flag court in right field off Brad Brach with two outs in the eighth to increase the lead to 5-1.
