WASHINGTON - The Orioles have selected the contract of Double-A Bowie reliever Julio DePaula.
The 31-year-old right-hander is listed on the lineup card, but no corresponding roster move has been announced. DePaula, who was signed away from the independent York Revolution earlier this year, has pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings over three appearances with the Baysox.
He returns to the majors for the first time since 2007, when he pitched to an 8.55 ERA over 16 appearances with the Twins as a 24-year-old. Former Orioles left-hander Mark Hendrickson recommended DePaula to the club.
Update: The Orioles will option right-hander Kevin Gausman to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for DePaula.
Gausman will make at least one start at Norfolk. He said he understands the move because the team needs a bullpen arm and he has options.
Also, Steve Pearce is not in the lineup for tonight's series opener against the Nationals because there's no designated hitter for the next two contests.
The Orioles are trying to move nine games above .500 for the first time since Sept. 20, 2013 (81-72).
