Orioles select contracts of catcher Michael Ohlman, left-hander Tim Berry and right-hander Eddie Gamboa
The Orioles today announced that they have selected the contracts of catcher Michael Ohlman and left-hander Tim Berry from Class-A Frederick and right-hander Eddie Gamboa from Triple-A Norfolk.
Ohlman, 22, hit a career-best .313/.410/.524, also setting career-highs in runs (61), hits (113), doubles (29), triples (4), home runs (13), RBI (53), stolen bases (5), walks (56) and total bases (189) in 100 games for the Keys in 2013. He also batted .290/.476/.774 in 10 games for the championship-winning Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League following the season. The Topps Carolina League Player of the Year, Ohlman was also named a Carolina League All-Star, won two Player of the Week Awards, led the CL in OPS, and won the batting title. In five minor league seasons since being drafted by the Orioles in the 11th round of the 2009 First Year Player Draft, Ohlman has batted .260/.357/.394.
Berry, 22, went 11-7 with a 3.85 ERA (152.0IP, 65ER) for the Keys in 2013. He finished second in the Carolina League with 11 wins, 27 starts and 152.0 innings pitched. Berry also went 2-0 with a 1.84 ERA (14.2IP, 3ER) in seven games (two starts) for Surprise in the AFL. The Orioles 50th round pick of the 2009 First Year Player Draft, Berry was named Organizational Pitcher of the Month in April, when he went 2-1 with a 3.21 ERA (28.0IP, 10ER) and struck out 35 batters in 28 innings.
Gamboa, 28, was converted into a knuckleballer this season and went a combined 6-11 with a 4.43 ERA (142.1IP, 70ER) and 114 strikeouts for Double-A Bowie (4-6, 3.64 in 16GS) and Triple-A Norfolk (2-5, 6.23 in 9GS). In six minor league seasons since being drafted by the Orioles in the 21st round of the 2008 First Year Player Draft, Gamboa has gone 37-34 with a 3.37 ERA (584.1IP, 219ER) in 164 games (74GS), averaging 7.1 strikeouts and 3.2 walks per 9.0 innings.
With these additions, the Orioles now have 36 players on the 40-man roster.
