Orioles waiting for reinforcements (updated)

The Orioles need to get healthy, and that includes their sickening stretch of futility that's threatening to drop them down the American League East standings as if there's an anchor tied to their waists. If that were actually true, they'd probably end up with strained obliques and intercostals. The Orioles have lost five in a row and eight of their last 10, but the schedule cuts them a break. No game until tomorrow night in St. Petersburg. Left-hander Zach Britton won't be idle tonight. He's making one more injury-rehab start with Double-A Bowie after allowing two unearned runs and throwing 88 pitches in five innings on Saturday. It's quite possible that the Orioles activate Britton and send him on the road trip, which also includes three games in Boston. Brian Roberts started at second base again last night at Single-A Delmarva and went 0-for-3 in his final game with the Shorebirds. He's supposed to return to Bowie on Friday before completing his rehab assignment on the road with Triple-A Norfolk. Roberts' assignment ends on June 11 and he could be activated the next day. He's progressed to where he's playing seven innings now and soon will go a full nine. If Roberts is back to his old form, and we have no way of knowing whether that will be the case, he makes the Orioles a better team. Robert Andino has done an admirable job in his absence, but they become deeper if he's freed up to bounce around to different positions as a super utility player. I'll gladly take his glove at third base. Matt Lindstrom is throwing in Sarasota and is inching closer to a return. Unfortunately, Nolan Reimold still hasn't been cleared to perform baseball-related activities despite the improvement in his physical condition. He's not anywhere near a return, considering that he'll eventually have to go on his own rehab assignment. I won't bother mentioning Taylor Teagarden. This team's issues extend far beyond the backup catcher, and he's apparently making another visit to a back specialist despite already having a team physician's diagnosis confirmed. I'm not sure what he's waiting to hear. Nick Markakis will visit a hand specialist today in Sarosota after X-rays taken on his right wrist Tuesday came back negative. I'm told that the specialist is Dr. John Hand, which seems fitting. Adam Jones tweeted that he was "all good" after being hit in the left wrist last night. It sure didn't look that way initially as he dropped to his knees in pain. The Orioles are far from good right now, but they've managed to stay tied for first place in the division. That's a neat trick, considering that they never held much of a lead and they've lost five in a row and eight of 10. So what can they do to right the ship? Is it as simple as waiting for guys like Britton and Roberts to return? Do they need to raid Norfolk's roster again? Bench certain guys? Rush Dylan Bundy to the majors? Rush whichever college pitcher they draft next week to the majors? Beg Roy Oswalt to change his mind? Beg Miguel Tejada to get younger and start hitting with power again? Submit your lists. Update: Executive vice president Dan Duquette said Jones is icing his left wrist today and "should be fine." Markakis is getting an MRI this morning on his right wrist, and the club should know the results around 3 p.m.
