ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Orioles activated Miguel Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list and pointed him toward the mound for tonight's start against the Rays at Tropicana Field.
Reliever Josh Stinson, who's out of minor league options, was designated for assignment to make room for Gonzalez on the 25-man roster.
The move leaves the Orioles with six relievers and six starters on their pitching staff. Left-hander T.J. McFarland is the long man backing up Gonzalez tonight.
Kevin Gausman will start the series finale Wednesday afternoon, and manager Buck Showalter will decide on the rest of his rotation following Thursday's off day.
Stinson made one appearance since having his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk on June 9. He tossed 1 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings against the Blue Jays on Friday.
Stinson has registered a 6.23 ERA in eight relief appearances with the Orioles, allowing nine runs and 16 hits in 13 innings. He's walked six and struck out six.
Stinson is 0-3 with a 5.19 ERA in nine games (two starts) with Norfolk.
The season began with Stinson in the Orioles' bullpen, but he passed through waivers and was outrighted to Norfolk on May 1. The process could play out again this week.
