Orioles recall Bleier and Verrett

NEW YORK - The Orioles redesigned their bullpen today by recalling left-hander Richard Bleier and right-hander Logan Verrett from Triple-A Norfolk. They optioned left-handers Jayson Aquino and Vidal Nuño following yesterday's 12-4 loss to the Yankees.

Bleier has allowed one earned run and seven hits in nine innings, with no walks and 11 strikeouts. He's made back-to-back appearances on Thursday and Friday after coming off the disabled list.

Bleier worked three innings on April 9. He's capable of providing length out of the bullpen.

The Orioles acquired Bleier from the Yankees on Feb. 21 for a player to be named and designated Christian Walker for assignment.

Bleier posted a 1.96 ERA in 23 relief innings with the Yankees last season in his first major league exposure. Left-handers batted .150 against him, but right-handers hit .304.

Declining an offer to play for Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic, Bleier made five appearances in spring training and allowed three runs and 10 hits in seven innings.

Verrett's last appearance came on Thursday. He's allowed nine earned runs (11 total) and 12 hits in 12 1/3 innings, with seven walks and 12 strikeouts. However, he's surrendered only one run in his last four outings over 6 2/3 innings.

The Orioles reacquired Verrett, their former Rule 5 pick, from the Mets on Nov. 30 for cash.

Verrett can back up left-hander Wade Miley today and allow Alec Asher to start on Tuesday in Boston, if the Orioles choose to go that route.
