The Orioles are making one roster move for sure today, with a bullpen spot open after they optioned Tyler Wilson late last night. They're also waiting for catcher Matt Wieters to go on paternity leave, figuring it could happen anytime starting this afternoon.
Pedro Alvarez's shot to right field last night assured the Orioles of hitting five or more home runs in a game for the seventh time this season, tops in the majors. But they also needed to stop the other team from joining the party.
If you were worried about Wade Miley insisting last night that his start was better than his final line indicated, focusing on how the ball came out of his hand so well, you can rest easily because he owned up to a poor outing.
"It was terrible," he said. "It's embarrassing for that to happen. I flat-out stunk. Everything I threw was in the middle and to a team like that, they're not expecting to miss."
No word on how the ball came out of his hand, but you can imagine.
The Orioles need Chris Tillman to be the stopper again while hoping his right shoulder doesn't start bothering him. They assume he's going to be fine or he wouldn't be on the mound, but there are no guarantees.
Tillman is 2-2 with a 2.48 ERA and 1.071 WHIP in five career starts against the Astros covering 32 2/3 innings. He faced them on May 24 and allowed two runs and three hits over seven innings in a 3-2 loss at Minute Maid Park.
The current group is batting .185 (10-for-54) against him. Jose Altuve is 2-for-14, George Springer is 2-for-11 and Jason Castro is 3-for-12 with two doubles and a home run.
Astros right-hander Mike Fiers is 8-6 with a 4.66 ERA in 23 games, including 22 starts. In his last two starts, he's allowed nine runs and 12 hits in 9 2/3 innings. He's surrendered five home runs.
Fiers is 6-3 with a 3.36 ERA in 12 home starts and 2-3 with a 6.27 ERA in 11 road games.
Fiers never has faced the Orioles. Alvarez is 3-for-14 with two home runs, Steve Pearce is 2-for-3 with a double, Mark Trumbo and Vance Worley are 0-for-2 and Miley is 0-for-1.
Chris Davis has four home runs his last three games, the third time this season that he's collected a homer in three or more consecutive games. It's happened nine times in his career.
Hyun Soo Kim has reached base safely in 16 of his last 18 games with a plate appearance, batting .324/.395/.426 while going 22-for-68 with two doubles, a triple, a home runs, three RBIs, seven walks and 10 runs scored.
Adam Jones has four leadoff home runs this season and has hit safely in 12 of 14 games, batting .345/.359/.534 while going 20-for-58 with two doubles, three home runs, nine RBIs and seven runs scored.
Manny Machado has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, batting .317/.333/.683 while going 19-for-60 with four doubles, six home runs, 16 RBIs and 13 runs scored.
Shameless plug alert: I'm appearing on "Wall to Wall Baseball" from noon-2 p.m. on MASN.
