Paredes on game-winning hit, Gausman on his outing and losing Davis

Jimmy Paredes said he just tried to stay calm and get a good pitch to hit when he batted with the bases loaded in the 11th inning today. "I didn't feel any pressure in that moment," Parades said. "Just went to home plate to do my job. Tried to put a good swing on the ball." He did that, for sure. His two-run double on the first pitch from Adam Warren turned a possible 1-0 loss into a stunning 2-1 victory over the Yankees at Camden Yards. Paredes sat for most of this game and then came off the bench to hit for Jonathan Schoop in the 11th. "Between innings, I went to the cage and got ready for my opportunity and tried to take advantage of that. Took some swings from both sides to get ready," Paredes said. "It's a good opportunity (here with the Orioles). I feel happy with that. When the Royals designated me, I was down. But the Orioles took me back. So happy with that." The win was the Orioles' 5,000th in club history counting the postseason, and the 1,250th in manager Buck Showalter's career. The Orioles improved to 87-59 and tied their season-high with their fifth straight victory. Right-hander Kevin Gausman pitched seven scoreless innings, but got a no-decision. He allowed seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. "Physically, I felt good," Gausman said. "Honestly, it was just establishing the fastball up and they just continued to swing at it. So that is one of the things you learn as the game goes on. That was a big pitch for me." Gausman has pitched seven or more innings in three consecutive starts for the first time in his career. Did he make any adjustments to start logging more innings? "Mechanically, no," he said. "I've made some adjustments in my workload, cutting down my bullpens a little bit. More than anything, I'm just learning and it's all come together these last couple of starts." Gausman was asked about Chris Davis and his 25-game suspension. The Orioles played without Davis for the first time this afternoon as he started serving the suspension. "Obviously it's a big blow," Gausman said. "He's a great teammate and a big part of this team. It kind of weighed on us a little bit, but once I took the mound, I just tried to focus on the game. "It's one of those things where questions kind of come to your head. We didn't know anything at all, what it was or how it happened. Obviously you're upset, but I think everyone is focused right now. There is nothing we can do to change the suspension. Buck told us the only way to really show how strong a team we are is to win."
