Paul Janish joins Orioles in Boston

BOSTON - The Orioles have brought infielder Paul Janish to Fenway Park and placed him on their taxi squad.

They have 24 hours to decide whether to select Janish's contract from Triple-A Norfolk.

Steve Pearce was in New York this morning to have his right elbow examined by Dr. David Altchek. We're waiting for manager Buck Showalter to provide an update.

Janish would appear to be insurance in case Pearce is out for an extended period of time.

The Orioles re-signed Janish to a minor league deal over the winter because they value his defense on the left side of the infield, primarily at shortstop, where he draws comparisons to J.J. Hardy.

Janish batted .248/.333/.280 with eight doubles and 18 RBIs in 76 games with Norfolk. He appeared in 14 games with the Orioles this summer and went 6-for-31 before they designated him for assignment. He accepted an outright assignment.

The Orioles would have to create a spot for Janish on the 40-man roster if they select his contract again.
