Pearce, Jones, Tillman and Walker after tonight's 7-2 win

The Orioles haven't lost consecutive home games since June 28-29. They've got one remaining in the regular season, so the streak will remain intact. The 93 wins this year match their 2012 total. Steve Pearce didn't play in tonight's 7-2 victory over the Red Sox. He's expected to miss the next few games after receiving a cortisone injection in his right wrist. Pearce said he realized that he couldn't play during batting practice. "It was a little more sore than usual, so I just thought I'd take care of it now," he said. pearce-at-bat-white-sidebar.jpgJust a precaution? "Definitely," he said. "It hasn't been affecting my swing. I've been swinging the bat really well the past couple of weeks. But they definitely wanted to take care of it before it started affecting the swing. "It's tough, but we've got to be smart and I've been cutting down on my swings a lot. It's just that time of year." Pearce could return to the lineup next week in New York. "Just a couple days to let it calm down, and right now I just want to be ready for the playoffs," he said. Adam Jones hit two home runs tonight after being off the past two days. "We had a team day off and I guess he just wanted to sit me," Jones said. "Nothing against it." The Orioles clinched their division on Tuesday, but they've gone 2-1 since the champagne celebration. "We still have games to play. We still have something to prove," Jones said. "We're trying to catch Anaheim for the best record overall. Guys understand that. Just because the normal stars aren't playing doesn't mean that the guys that are playing can't easily fill in the role. That's what the guys are doing. It's a collective team." Jones said Chris Tillman, who won his 13th game tonight, is approaching "that Felix Hernandez-type stuff." "He's matured and he wants to be the ace of the staff," Jones added. "He's doing things that aces do. It's up to him to have to want it." Tillman reached 200 innings for the second consecutive season. "Two hundred innings in today's game is the precedence," Jones said. "It means he's going out there and averaging at least a little over six innings per start. That will get the job done." Tillman said he was out of sync in the first, when four of the first five batters reached and he fell behind 2-0. Tillman has allowed 21 runs in the first inning this season. "It was a grind from the get-go, especially the first inning," he said. "Nicky (Hundley) hung with me and we were able to work through it." Tillman bounced back after the first and retired the last 10 batters. He completed seven innings on 105 pitches. "It's important," he said. "Anytime I get in a little bit of a funk, it's important for me to speed myself up and get back in sync. It comes down to pitch-calling, too, and he did a great job of calling the right pitches to get me back in sync. "It's just have a feel for it from the first pitch on. I was a little off early, but we were able to work through it. It's something that's been there my whole career. At the end of the night, you shake it off because we came out on top." Tillman downplayed the personal achievement of reaching 200 innings. "It's not the numbers, it's not the personal goal. It's the team goal," he said. "Two hundred's important because it means you're out there and competing for your team and you're giving your team a chance to win. It kind of falls under the obvious, but it's important to get deep in games and give your team a chance to win." Christian Walker replaced Pearce in the lineup and hit his first major league home run. "It's exciting. It's really exciting," he said. "I wasn't originally in the lineup, but got an opportunity to get in there and maybe earn some more at-bats, and luckily it worked out in my favor. "About halfway through the first game, I think I was settled in and relaxed. The guys here are great and they've been more than welcoming and helpful in letting me get settled in." Walker called the home run "a big confidence booster." "It's easy to stay motivated," he said. "It's easy to continue working on the things I've been working on when I've been successful and things are working out in my favor."
