Pedro Alvarez hits grand slam (updated)

SARASOTA, Fla. - Pedro Alvarez chose an opportune time to hit his first home run with the Orioles.

Alvarez also provided another reminder that he can strike quickly, no matter how he's been faring at the plate. He's always a threat.

Batting with the bases full today and two outs in the second inning, Alvarez drove a Jhan Marinez pitch over the left-center field fence for a grand slam that gave the Orioles a 4-0 lead over the Rays.

Logan Morrison and Evan Longoria hit back-to-back home runs off Chris Tillman with two outs in the third to reduce the lead to 4-3.

Hyun Soo Kim led off the second with a sharp single into center field, making him 7-for-15 since an 0-for-23 start. Caleb Joseph singled with two outs, Machado worked a walk off Marinez and Alvarez cleared the bases.

Chris Tillman was shutting out the Rays over 2 2/3 innings after surrendering two runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings in his Grapefruit League debut against the Blue Jays in Dunedin. He was trying to stand James Loney in the third after a leadoff single, but Morrison and Longoria hit their first spring home runs.

Center fielder Adam Jones barely flinched on Morrison's blast. Longoria cleared the left field fence two pitches later.

Corey Dickerson struck out to end the third and leave Tillman's pitch count at 47, including 32 strikes.

Tillman gave up a one-out double to Morrison in the first before getting a called third strike on Dickerson on a 92 mph fastball to end the inning. He retired the side in order in the second with two strikeouts and stranded Loney in the third after a leadoff single.

No one is warming in the Orioles bullpen. Tillman will return for the fourth.

Tyler Wilson threw two scoreless innings in an intrasquad game at the minor league complex, allowing two hits and walking one batter. He threw 26 pitches, 15 for strikes.

Darren O'Day had two scoreless innings, as well, allowing one hit and striking out four. He threw 23 of 32 pitches for strikes.

Brad Brach allowed two hits in two scoreless innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. He threw 20 of 32 pitches for strikes.

Update: Mark Trumbo hit a two-run homer in the third, his second in two games, and Caleb Joseph added an RBI single with two outs to increase the lead to 7-3.

Kim singled again, making him 8-for-16 since the 0-for-23 start. Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy also singled in the inning, all the damage coming against right-hander Kyle McPherson.
