Pedro Alvarez on his clutch hit and winning without a homer (other clubhouse quotes)

The Orioles rallied from five runs down to win tonight and they did it without hitting a single home run. Pedro Alvarez, whose single tied the game 5-5 in the seventh, said no one should be surprised by that.

The Orioles won by hitting 10 singles, a double and a triple and by going 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

"I mean this is a team that is perfectly capable of scoring runs without hitting home runs," Alvarez said. "Obviously everyone likes to see home runs, but this is a team that hits the ball hard and home runs happen. We don't try to hit home runs and we are capable of putting up a crooked number at any point in the game.

"This is a team that definitely has that capability as you saw today. But most importantly, if Ubaldo (Jimenez) doesn't keep the game the way it is, we don't have a chance. Couple jams there, he made some big pitches and the bullpen coming in controlling damage allowed us to come back and get the win."

They produced the comeback with two runs on three hits in the sixth and five on six hits in the seventh.

Alvarez was 1-for-11 this year batting against left-handed pitching when he produced the game-tying single off lefty Justin Wilson in the seventh. What was the key in facing the lefty there?

"Just competing," Alvarez said. "Try to go pitch-to-pitch, no matter who is on the mound. Just compete and see how I can contribute to the team on that pitch."

MORE CLUBHOUSE QUOTES

Ubaldo Jimenez on allowing five runs and nine hits in five innings: "Yes, since the first pitch the sinker was too low and I couldn't throw it where I wanted to. But I battled and it was really a tough night out there from the first pitch. But I hung in there.

"It was sinking a lot but it was not high enough and at the same time you don't want to throw it too high or they can hit it a long way. What matters to me is that we won the game. I'm here to be there for the team and it's great that we won the game. This was a great team victory."

Jonathan Schoop on his first professional triple since June 12, 2012 with Double-A Bowie: "Pretty nice. I thought it would not happen ever. I was looking to get a good pitch and hit the ball hard and hopefully it would find a hole and it did. This team is capable of doing anything, even when down 5-0. We just stay in the game."

Schoop, were you looking to hit that triple to right field?: "I wasn't looking to hit to right. I was looking to hit the ball hard and the ball was a little bit outside and I put the barrel on it and it went over there."

Chris Davis on getting a clutch hit off lefty Justin Wilson tonight: "Last year with the Yankees, I saw him quite a bit. So, you have an idea of what he is going to do. In that situation, you are just looking for a pitch out over the plate, which he gave me first pitch and I wasn't ready for it. So you have to battle after that. I'm proud of the way we've been swinging the bats."

Davis, is team unfairly stereotyped as a homer-only team?: "I think so. I mean, it's been such our forte the last few years, it's kind of hard to get away from it. But we put emphasis in spring training that we wanted to have quality at-bats. That is something Cooley (hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh) really preaches. You are looking for a certain pitch and you make the guy come to you. We've done a good job of that and it's definitely paid off."

The five-run comeback was the Orioles' biggest come-from-behind win of the year. They are now 4-7 when allowing five or more runs,

Schoop had 10 triples in the minors. He has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games batting .321 (17-for-53) with two doubles, a triple, two homers, eight runs and seven RBIs.
