Pitching matchups vs. Red Sox and notes on Wieters and Gonzalez

The Orioles will face two right-handers in their three-game series against the Boston Red Sox that begins Friday night at Camden Yards. Does Henry Urrutia get the start at designated hitter in all three games? Stay tuned. Here are the matchups: Friday: Chris Tillman (12-3, 3.84 ERA) vs. Ryan Dempster (5-8, 4.28 ERA) Saturday: Scott Feldman (2-1, 4.73 ERA) vs. Brandon Workman (0-1, 4.40 ERA) Sunday: Jason Hammel (7-7, 5.20 ERA) vs. Jon Lester (9-6, 4.50 ERA) Tillman will attempt to become the first Oriole to win 13 games in a season since Erik Bedard in 2007. Lester is 14-2 with a 2.86 ERA in 22 career starts against the Orioles, and 7-1 with a 2.99 ERA in 11 starts at Camden Yards. Catcher Matt Wieters has nine hits in his last four games. His streak of four consecutive multi-hit games is the longest of his career. Wieters' average has increased from .229 to .247 in the last nine games. Wieters has hit 59 home runs since the start of the 2011 season, the most in the majors by a catcher, according to STATS. He's ahead of J.P. Arencibia (58), Brian McCann (57) and Carlos Santana (56). Miguel Gonzalez has made eight consecutive quality starts dating back to June 6. According to STATS, since 1980, Gonzalez's streak is tied for the third-longest by an Oriole starter behind Jeremy Guthrie's 10 from May 8-June 26, 2007 and Bedard's nine from July 7-Aug. 21, 2007. Yes, another Bedard reference today. We're up to three in two blog entries. You're welcome. Gonzalez has gone his first 32 career starts without losing consecutive decisions. Not to be confused with consecutive starts. According to Elias, it's the second-longest such streak to start a career by a pitcher in Orioles/St. Louis Browns history, trailing Ken Dixon, who went his first 33 career starts from Sept. 22, 1984-June 16, 1986 without losing two straight decisions. Dixon did lose two straight decisions within his first 33 career starts, but one of those defeats came in relief.
