Post-game notes: O's fall 8-2 in Seattle series opener

Not tonight: One night after scoring a season-high eight runs, the Orioles were no-hit thru six innings Monday in a 8-2 loss to Seattle. They were held to just five hits, tying their low total for the season. The Orioles have scored two runs or less in seven of their last 10 games and three runs or less 10 times on the year. The O's fall to 2-12 on the year and have lost 10 of their last 11 games. They are 1-4 on this ten-game road trip, and 2-6 in road games. The Orioles are now 0-5 in the first game of a series on the season. They are 20-35 all-time at SafeCo Field. Tough night: Brad Bergesen had a third straight short outing, lasting just 2 2/3 innings. He allowed six hits and seven runs (four earned). He walked three and allowed a homer. Ty Wigginton's error with the bases loaded and one out in the third helped Seattle to its seven-run third inning. Had Wigginton started a 5-4-3 double play on the grounder hit to him, the O's could have left the third trailing just 1-0. But Bergesen allowed a two-run single, RBI double and two-run homer after the error. He has allowed 21 hits in 10 2/3 innings on the year, with 14 coming for extra-bases. Bergesen's ERA is 12.19 and opponent batters are hitting .420 against him. O's starting pitching had produced three straight quality starts with an ERA of 3.32 before Monday. Good night for him: Jason Berken pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings in a long-relief role. He has allowed just 1 ER over 8 1/3 his last two outings and lowered his ERA on the year to 1.50. Entering Monday's game, Orioles starters had allowed just 19 walks on the season, the fewest in the Majors. Their strikeout to walks ratio was 3.84. Wigginton hit his fifth homer of the year, a solo shot, in the ninth inning. He went 1 for 3 and has hit five homers in his last seven games. In that time, he is 8 for 25 with five homers and 11 RBI. Cleanup hitter: Nolan Reimold batted fourth for the second time on the season and 6th time in his career. He went 0 for 3 with a walk and has just three hits in his last 23 at bats. Luke Scott went 1 for 4 and is 1 for 11 his last three games. Matt Wieters went 2 for 4, snapping a 2 for 20 drought. It was his fifth multi-hit game. Wieters has just one RBI over his last 10 games. Winning pitcher Doug Fister had a no-hitter through six innings. Nick Markakis led off the 7th with a clean, ground single to center. Fister, now 2-1, 1.42, lost his shutout bid on Luke Scott's two-out, RBI double in the 7th. Franklin Gutierrez went 2 for 2 with an RBI for Seattle and he leads the AL with eight multi-hit games. Gutierrez has a career average of .511 (24 for 47) vs. Orioles pitching. The Mariners are 7-7 and 5-2 at home with the win. They have two games left on a nine-game homestand. Seattle is now 22-8 in its last 30 home games. The Mariners recorded at least one extra-base hit for the 45th consecutive game and played error-free ball for the 5th game in a row. Tuesday night at 10:10, David Hernandez (0-2, 4.91) pitches for the Orioles and 27-year-old lefty Jason Vargas (1-1, 5.56) goes for Seattle. In three career starts vs. Baltimore, Vargas is 0-1, 2.81. Hernandez is making his third start of the year and second of this road trip. He is 0-1, 5.56 in two career starts vs. Seattle, both at SafeCo Field. In the minors Monday, Jake Arrieta allowed just one earned run in six innings in Norfolk's loss to Gwinnett. Arrieta has an ERA of 0.50 on the year, allowing just 1 ER and 11 hits in 18 innings. Bowie (9-3) lost its second straight, 5-3, to Erie. First place Frederick (7-4) beat Potomac 8-5 for its third win in a row. Delmarva (7-5) beat Hagerstown 3-2 to snap a three-game losing streak. T.J. Baxter scored the winning run in the last of the 11th, scoring from second base on a wild pitch.
