Post-game Notes: O's fall in 13

Not his year - O's starter Jeremy Guthrie struggled again. He gave up ten hits and seven runs (all earned) over 5 2/3 innings. Guthrie's ERA is now 5.66. It was his most earned runs allowed since he also gave up seven on 8-29-08 vs. Tampa. Over his last five starts, he is 0-4, 7.55. Over his last two starts, Guthrie has given up 12ER and 21 hits over 10 1/3 for an ERA of 10.45. He leads the American League with 28 homers allowed. Guthrie has allowed five runs or more 10 times this year. Last year, he allowed 2ER or less in 17 of 30 starts, this season he has done that in just four of 24 starts. The Orioles fall to 4-6 in extra-inning games, 10-21 vs. the AL West and 4-11 in August. Relievers Brian Bass and Matt Albers combined to give up 10 hits and nine runs over just two innings of work. The 17 runs allowed was not the most by the O's this year. They gave up 19 runs in a loss at Texas on April 15th. The 23 hits allowed ties the season high, first set by Boston on August 2nd. The 23 hits is an Angels' season-best. Nick the stick - Nick Markakis went 2 for 6 with a two-run homer and has now reached base in 36 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the Majors. The franchise record is 52 in a row set by Kevin Millar in 2007. Markakis is 15 for 41 during a nine-game hitting streak. Extra, Extra - Nine of the O's 14 hits today went for extra bases. The Orioles have 25 extra-base hits in this series with 18 doubles, 3 triples and 4 homers. After hitting just three homers over their previous 81 innings, the Birds hit three homers today. Matt Wieters' RBI single in the 8th inning snapped an 0 for 16 stretch by Orioles' pinch hitters. The Angels now lead the season series, 7 wins to 2 for the Orioles, who fall to 8-21 since the All-Star break. Chone Figgins had four hits with three doubles and 3 RBI. His RBI single in the 6th was his 1,000th career hit. Figgins is 13 for 27 with 7 RBI during a six-game batting streak. Figgins is 15 for 37 (.405) this year vs. O's pitching and is a career .333 hitter vs. the Birds. B-Rob delivers - Brian Roberts was 2 for 7 with a two-run homer and his league-leading 45th double. During a six-game batting streak, Roberts is 12 for 30 with seven doubles and 5 RBI. Roberts has hit 17 doubles in his last 28 contests. Roberts stole third base in the 9th inning today and is 13 for 13 in steals of third this year. Luke Scott, who entered today batting just .149 over his last 21 games, went 2 for 6 with a double and solo homer. It was his team-leading 20th homer. The Angels were 29-29 on June 11th, but are 41-16 since. LA is 21-8 in the second half and now a season high 25 games over .500.
