Post-game Notes: Sox complete sweep in Baltimore

Not his day - Losing pitcher Jason Berken entered with a record of 3-0 and 4.23 ERA over his previous five starts. But he walked two of the first three batters he faced today and it only got worse from there. Berken falls to 5-12, 6.41. In three innings today he allowed ten hits (one off his season high) and six runs. Over his last two starts, he has given up 11ER in 9 1/3 frames. Berken gave up three runs in the first today and on the year, 28 of the 74 runs he has given up have come in the opening inning. Berken falls to 0-3, 11.66 in four starts this year vs. Boston. The Red Sox had ten hits in 19 at bats vs. Berken today. The Sox out-scored the O's 23-9 in sweeping the weekend set. The Sox on offense - In 18 games this year vs. O's pitching, Boston batted .335 as a team and outscored the O's in runs 130 to 68. The Sox had 44 doubles, four triples and 29 homers this year vs. the O's. The Orioles team ERA vs. Boston is 6.87. The Sox averaged 7.2 runs per game this year vs. the O's. The Birds have lost four in a row and six of eight games. They ended this homestand going 2-5. Two Sox players extended hitting streaks. Dustin Pedroia extended his to 12 and Victor Martinez now has a 19-game hitting streak. Magnificent Matt - Matt Wieters had a second straight three-hit game today, going 3 for 4 and scoring twice. Over his last seven games, Wieters is 12 for 25 (.480) with two homers and 10 RBI. Wieters this year hit .455 (20 for 44) vs. Boston pitching. Luke Scott's two-run homer in the 4th today was his 24th of the year, setting a new career high after he hit 23 in 2008. Scott has hit 18 of his 24 homers at home. He has three homers the past six games and six since the All-Star break. Brian Roberts only hit today was a double in the 5th. It was his 54th double of the year, adding on to his O's single-season record. With his next double, Roberts will tie Lance Berkman for most doubles in a season by a switch-hitter. Berkman currently holds the Major League record with 55 in 2001. The O's, who have scored just 13 runs over the last five games, today scored three runs or less for the 27th time in the second half. They are 1-26 in those contests. Boston won the season series, 16 wins to two. The Sox went 8-1 at home and in Baltimore this year. This is the fewest O's wins vs. Boston since going 1-12 in 1987. Boston has won eight in a row over the O's, outscoring them 68-29 in that span. Boston has won 10 of 11 and 23 of the last 26 games between the teams.
