Derek Jeter played in his 2,401st game tonight, tying Mickey Mantle for most by a Yankee in franchise history.
The Orioles tied their season high with their fifth consecutive win. They also did it May 21-26.
The 12 runs tonight matched their season high set July 26 at Toronto.
Nolan Reimold is batting .379 (11-for-29) with two triples, two homers and six RBIs during his seven-game hitting streak.
Matt Wieters is batting .440 (11-for-25) during his seven-game hitting streak.
J.J. Hardy was 0-for-29 against the Yankees before hitting a two-run homer in the second inning. He's batting .357 (15-for-42) with two homers, five RBIs and nine runs scored during a nine-game hitting streak. Hardy leads all American League shortstops with 25 homers.
The Orioles kept pouring it on after their six-run second inning.
"For us, that's really good," Hardy said. "We can't just get a six-run lead against those guys and then stop hitting. It was good for us to add on for sure."
Yankees starter A.J. Burnett was leaving a lot of pitches over the middle of the plate.
"I think he'd tell you he wasn't at his best today," Hardy said. "Even not at his best, we've got to put together some pretty good at-bats. He's got some really good stuff, so they're not comfortable at-bats by any means."
It was an emotional night for everyone with the moment of silence before the game for Mike Flanagan and the video tribute after the bottom of the first inning.
"Any time you get a tribute like that, and a moment of silence before the game starts, it's a little bit extra added emotions of the game for sure," Wieters said. "It was a big game to win. Glad to play well today."
Asked about Tommy Hunter's performance, Wieters said, "I love the way Tommy pitches. He throws strikes, he comes right at you. He's able to use all of his pitches. Guys like that can be successful in this league for a long time. Most importantly, he throws strike after strike."
Hunter also got caught up in the emotion of the night despite his limited time with Flanagan.
"He touched a lot of people," Hunter said. "That's very evident from the way it's been going around. Guys loved him. It's one of those things where you wish you got to know a guy like that a little better. Just say prayers for his family and hope everything's going well."
