Pre-game notes from Bowie

Checking in from Bowie where I'll get to watch the Baysox chase a playoff berth tonight as they host Altoona. It's the final regular season home game for Bowie, but they, of course, hope to be back here this year for the playoffs. The Baysox are trying to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Bowie is a ½ game back of second place Harrisburg for a playoff berth with five games left. "Harrisburg has been playing well, so we have our work cut out for us," Bowie manager Brad Komminsk said. Meanwhile, Joel Guzman needs one more homer to tie Walter Young for the Baysox single-season record. Young hit 33 in 2004 and Guzman hit number 32 here last night. "He's had maybe his best year ever," Komminsk said. "He's put himself back on the map a little bit, he's done a really nice job for us. A big part of our offense. "Having his bat in the middle (of our lineup) has been a huge help for some guys. He's pretty quiet, doesn't say a lot, but the guys all like him and respect him." Guzman is batting .278-32-91 and has hit four homers over his last seven games. The Baysox bullpen could get closer Pedro Beato back soon. The right-hander is on the disabled list and has not pitched since August 23rd due to shoulder tendonitis. "He's fine. He's going to throw off the mound tomorrow and we may have him for one more outing (in the regular season)," Komminsk said of Beato, who is 4-0, 2.11 with 16 saves. Bowie first baseman Joe Mahoney tells me he will play some winter ball this year in Venezuela. Mahoney, who is batting .320-9-29 in 47 Double-A games, will get married in Saratoga, New York in early October, then about a week later head to Venezuela and play there through around Thanksgiving. "My agent and John Stockstill have been working to put me in the best situation to impress the right people and go into next year," Mahoney said. Baysox infielder Ryan Adams, meanwhile, will be playing in the Arizona Fall League for the first time. "It's a tremendous honor," Adams said. "Look at the guys that have gone to the Fall League before and there is a crazy rate of guys that go there that make the big leagues. It's a huge honor and I'm excited." Adams is batting .301-13-65 and leads the Eastern League in hits and doubles with 43. He is 6th in batting and 2nd in extra-base hits. Rick Zagone (4-5, 4.46) will pitch for Bowie here tonight before the Baysox head to Richmond tomorrow for a four-game series to wrap up the regular season.
