Pregame notes on Smith, Washington and more

CHICAGO - Tonight's game will be delayed by rain at the start. It was scheduled to begin at 7:10 p.m. CT but it has been raining here most of the afternoon. But a press box announcement indicated that they do expect to get this game in. Now we just await a start time.

Update: The White Sox announced that tonight's game will begin at 9:40 ET.

Meanwhile, here is how it is going for the Orioles these days. The losses are piling up and so are the injuries. First baseman Chris Davis went on the 10-day disabled list officially today, retroactive to Tuesday, with a right oblique strain. And then manager Buck Showalter revealed that outfielder Seth Smith is now dealing with a "physical issue."

Smith went 1-for-2 with an RBI double here Monday night and walked three times batting leadoff in right field. But he didn't play last night and is not in the lineup tonight.

"He's not 100 percent and couldn't play last night," manager Buck Showalter said during his pregame media session. "We'll see if he's available tonight in some capacity. We have stuff like that every night. It is just a matter whether somebody asks the question (about a specific player). I'm not going to broadcast it. He's not the only one. We're short."

Davis has returned to Baltimore, but not for any additional medical attention, at least for now.

"I know he had a lot of trouble sleeping last night," Showalter said. "It will probably be a few days before you start any kind of treatment. But you're not going to do anything that may set it back. He's pretty sore today."

So who starts at first base with Davis out?

"Well, Trey (Mancini) has played it the last two nights. See what each night brings and who is available physically. We've got a couple of guys banged up. We've got some people who have experience with it. We can handle it."

Today the Orioles selected the contract of first baseman/outfielder David Washington from Norfolk. He will make his major league debut tonight, batting eighth as the DH. With the Tides he was batting 291/.344/.517 with 16 doubles, 10 homers, 26 RBIs and an .861 OPS in 56 games. He is hitting .405 in June.

"He was the hottest hitter and he's swinging the bat real well in Norfolk. Got to see him a lot in spring. And, he's still a young guy, 25-ish. He's got a lot of life in his bat and we'll see."

Showalter was asked if Pedro Álvarez was considered to replace Davis on the roster?

"I think so. I'm sure we considered everybody," he said.

Without Davis, more at-bats could also open up for outfielder Hyun Soo Kim, who is batting leadoff tonight and playing in left.

"I hope so. I hope so," Showalter said. "But you know, he kind of controls that. I hope so. I'd like to see if he could. He's not far from the form he had. He's really not doing a whole lot different than he did last year, except the average might not be as high."

Showalter said Darren O'Day, on the DL with a right shoulder strain, will throw tomorrow. He is eligible to come off the DL on Saturday.

"We'll have an idea of whether he's going to make that tomorrow," Showalter said.
