ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Orioles have used five pitchers tonight, including Tommy Hunter, who retired the side in order on 12 pitches in the bottom of the eighth inning.
They look like slackers compared to the Rays. Fernando Rodney, who will work the top of the ninth, is the seventh pitcher summoned by manager Joe Maddon.
Welcome, again, to September baseball.
The Orioles bullpen hadn't allowed an earned run since Sept. 11 before the Rays tied the game against Kevin Gausman in the seventh. They had gone 21 2/3 innings without a blemish, including 20 on the current road trip.
Gausman was throwing serious heat again, his fastball routinely hitting 98-99 mph.
Jim Johnson is warming for the Orioles. Who's next, Ryan Kohlmeier?
Update: Tommy Hunter stranded a runner on second base, and we're headed to the 10th inning.
The Orioles are 8-5 in extras, the Rays 8-7.
Pinch-hitter Desmond Jennings, a late scratch from the lineup because of neck stiffness, reached on an infield hit leading off the bottom of the ninth inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. David DeJesus lined to first baseman Chris Davis, and Ben Zobrist sent a scoring liner up the middle that Hunter knocked down before scrambling for the ball and throwing to first.
The ball would have gone through Hunter's chest if he hadn't reacted as quickly as he did. And his throw to Davis probably would have been clocked at 120 mph.
Zobrist made a nice play to end the top of the ninth, ranging behind second base to glove Danny Valencia's grounder and throw him out. If that ball gets through, Davis probably scores the go-ahead run after his two-out walk and stolen base.
Darren O'Day is warming in the Orioles' bullpen.
Update II: O'Day retired the Rays in order in the 10th. Brian Matusz struck out both batters he faced in the 11th, and Josh Stinson struck out Jennings to push the game into the 12th.
The teams have combined to use 16 pitchers. They have one hit in the last four innings - Jennings' single in the ninth.
Delmon Young was 5-for-9 with a home run against Matusz before striking out tonight.
No action in either bullpen at the moment. It's Stinson vs. Jake Odorizzi.
Update III: Seven up, seven down for Stinson, and we're headed to the top of the 14th.
This game has lasted more than five hours. The previous high this season was 4:35 on June 13 vs. Boston. The 14 innings matches the season high on Aug. 14 vs. Arizona.
T.J. McFarland was warming in the bottom of the 13th. Remember when he was warming in the first?
Nick Markakis reached on an infield single in the 13th for the Orioles' first hit since the seventh. They're 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and have stranded 11.
