Third baseman Anthony Rendon went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored and designated hitter Jayson Werth went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk in rehab assignments with the high Single-A Potomac Nationals on Saturday night.
The P-Nats fell to Myrtle Beach 7-5, thanks to a five-run Pelicans sixth inning that erased a 4-2 lNationals lead.
Rendon, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a left quad strain, was making his first rehab appearance, while Werth, on the DL recovering from a fractured left wrist was playing in his third rehab game this week. Werth's RBI hit came with two outs and Rendon played into the third inning. Werth left after his fifth inning at-bat.
Potomac now goes on the road, but Double-A Harrisburg begins a series at home Monday. The Senators are facing Bowie on the road on Sunday, so Rendon and/or Werth could join them at Prince George's Stadium for another rehab assignment appearance. Sunday's game begins at 2:05 p.m.
Who do you think will return to the Nationals first, Rendon or Werth? Or could it be Denard Span, who is on the 15-day DL with back problems? Ryan Zimmerman is still out with a foot injury. Danny Espinosa went down with two calf cramps in the ninth inning of Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Dodgers. One can only hope it was not a pulled muscle or the Nats' injury list could be growing.
Update: The Nationals announced Sunday morning that Zimmerman will begin a rehab assignment today with Double-A Harrisburg.
