Roberts staying with team, Beerer reassigned, lineup

SARASOTA, Fla. - Second baseman Brian Roberts will go on the 15-day disabled list and head north with the Orioles rather than stay back at extended spring training. He'll continue to take batting practice and infield, and expects to accompany his teammates to Toronto and Chicago on the first road trip. He'll probably skip Anaheim. "That's the plan now, try to stay with the team and go that way," he said. "I really didn't want to be separated again and be down here away from my teammates and not feel a part of things. My doctor felt it was very important to be in that environment as much as possible, in the crowded stadiums and start to readjust to the travel scheduled and those sorts of things all over again, which he's had some guys have difficulty with in the past. "We think one of the important things is to be out there in that atmosphere and take BP with the guys. It will depend what they need to do to get ready. I'm not going to get in the way of the 25 guys who need to get ready to play a game every night, but I'm going to get my work in at the same time. "I told Buck (Showalter), 'You don't know how excited you made me, to know I don't have to stay down here and be isolated from everybody.' That was part of the miserable aspect of it last year. Last year was very important for me to get down here and get away from the craziness. Now it's important for me to get back in the craziness. That's the difference of where I'm at in the recovery process." Roberts eventually will have to go on an injury rehab assignment, since he hasn't played in any exhibition games. "It would probably be very similar to any other rehab process," he said. "I could play a few games here or up there." I'll have more from Roberts after I drive to Bradenton. Also, outfielder Scott Beerer has been reassigned to minor league camp. He'll start the season at Triple-A Norfolk. Endy Chavez remains out of the lineup for tonight's game against the Pirates, but his sore groin is improving and he could return on Tuesday. For the Orioles: Nolan Reimold LF J.J. Hardy SS Nick Markakis RF Adam Jones CF Matt Wieters C Mark Reynolds 3B Wilson Betemit 1B Ronny Paulino DH Robert Andino 2B Tommy Hunter RHP
