Rogers undergoes elbow surgery (and more notes, O's win 9-6)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Josh Rogers underwent a procedure on his left elbow today known as an ulnar collateral ligament "revision," the name given for a second Tommy John surgery.

Rogers had the first procedure as a high school senior.

Dr. Keith Meister performed today's surgery in Arlington, Texas and the Orioles said it was successful. The timetable is the same, with Rogers missing the rest of the 2019 season and perhaps most of 2020.

"It went well today," said manager Brandon Hyde.

Outfielder DJ Stewart is headed to Double-A Bowie for his injury rehab assignment after appearing in five Rookie-level Gulf Coast League games and going 2-for-15 with two home runs.

Stewart has been on the injured list since June 6 with a sprained right ankle.

"Hopefully he can stay healthy and see what happens after that," Hyde said.

Pitcher Nate Karns also visited the clubhouse yesterday and watched last night's game from the dugout, but he's staying in the Gulf Coast League while recovering from a right forearm strain.

"He's still in part of his progression and rehab stuff in Sarasota," Hyde said.

Keon Broxton, starting in center field tonight and batting ninth, is slashing .200/.242/.322 with 43 strikeouts in 90 at-bats with the Orioles. The glove and speed are keeping him on the roster.

Also, there isn't stiff competition for the job.

"I think Keon came as advertised defensively," Hyde said. "He's done a great job in center field. Swung the bat pretty well early when he got to us. He's struggled a little bit offensively right now. He hits tirelessly with our hitting guys. He shows at times there's some ABs in there where he stays closed and uses the whole field, but obviously he's struggled a little bit and we're hoping to get him on track."

The Orioles held another baserunning meeting yesterday to address the mistakes. Hyde wants his players to be aggressive, but also aware of game situations and when to tap the brakes.

Jonathan Villar leads the team in stolen bases with 16, but he's been caught six times and picked off twice.

"We have a lot of conversations with him and I've seen him for a lot of years," Hyde said. "You don't want to handcuff Jonny because he is a good baserunner a lot of the time and he is aggressive and he's proven that he can steal bases. We talk a lot to him about picking spots and about a little bit of awareness on the bases and understanding situations and understanding being in tune to what's going on.

"I think there are times where he feels like he can make a play that's not there. A couple nights ago, kind of a delayed steal off (Mike) Zunino. Just not the right time or place and so I'm hoping he's learning from all the conversations we've had."

The caught stealings Monday night occurred with Villar running in the fifth while the Orioles were down one run and Anthony Santander running in the seventh with a two-run deficit.

"We've had a ton of baserunning mistakes these last two weeks," Hyde said. "Gotten picked off a couple times in non-basestealing situations. We had a couple really poor reads two nights ago, we did some things that were uncharacteristic and we wanted to gather back in and talk about what our priorities are on the bases and Jonny's a part of that.

"We're going to make mistakes on the bases. I do want them to be aggressive mistakes, but I also want us to play the scoreboard, too, and if we're down a couple runs, we're not trying to stretch things, we're not trying to steal a base in a poor spots. Those types of situations. And that just comes from a lot of talk."

The Red Sox's Xander Bogaerts is replacing injured Rangers outfielder/designated hitter Hunter Pence on the American League All-Star team. Trey Mancini still hasn't made it.

Kevin Kiermaier was scratched from the Rays lineup with left wrist soreness.

The Rays are going with a bullpen game tonight after Ryne Stanek. Lots of pitching changes are on the horizon.

"It's kind of like an early in spring training game where you face a guy for an inning or two and somebody else will be in there," Hyde said.

Hyde had to figure out a lineup without knowing who followed Stanek. Ryan Yarbrough has been optioned.

"It's harder. There's no doubt," Hyde said. "You try to predict a little bit what they could do. We talked to our advance guys and some of the guys inside and predict a little bit, but I have no idea. Stanek's starting. That's all I know."

Update: Rio Ruiz's throwing error in the third inning allowed Joey Wendle to score for a 1-0 lead.

Update II: Ruiz made up for the error with a three-run homer off Austin Pruitt in the fourth.

Update III: Michael Brosseau hit a solo homer with two outs in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2.

Update IV: Avisaíl García's RBI single in the sixth tied the game.

Update V: The Orioles have scored six runs off José Alvarado in the ninth, the last three on Renato Núñez's 19th home run of the season.

Update VI: Richard Bleier gave up three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Shawn Armstrong stranded two runners and the Orioles held on for a 9-6 win to avoid the sweep.
