Russell on Showalter: "Pretty happy grandfather"

Orioles manager Buck Showalter and wife Angela are the proud grandparents of a 9-pound, 1-ounce boy. Daughter Allie is doing fine.

Showalter flew into Dallas early this morning.

Bench coach John Russell, who's serving as interim manager tonight, exchanged text messages with Showalter. Included was a photo of Angela holding the baby and Showalter sitting next to them.

"Pretty happy grandfather," Russell said.

"He's doing fine. I don't know if he quite made it for the actual birth, but I think he got there 45 minutes to an hour later.

"Really, really happy for him that he got to go and spend that time with them."

Director of player development Brian Graham is serving as bench coach tonight.

Center fielder Adam Jones is out of tonight's lineup because the Orioles want to rest him before he plays the next six games on artificial turf.

The Orioles have three games against the Rays at Tropicana Field, are off Monday, and have three games against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

"Buck and I talked about it," Russell said. "Especially like Buck says, just get him off his feet. He's played hard. You guys know how hard he plays. And we're going into six games on turf and that turf can really beat up a guy who runs around a lot.

"Past times, when (J.J.) Hardy was still active, you get on the turf a few days and you need a day off because it's a grind on you. So we felt like today was a good day. He's been playing hard. To get him off his feet, especially late flight tonight and playing Tampa on turf. It's nice to have the off-day on Monday, but then we have to go to Toronto and play on turf there.

"You've got to keep the guys fresh, but especially Adam because he runs around and plays the game hard. Keep him fresh. Keep pushing it and you don't want to turn it into a two or three day thing to get him back on track. Giving him a spell every once in a while will keep it going for him."

Jones is 13-for-34 (.382) in his last nine games. He ranks second in the American League and sixth in the majors with a .404 average (19-for-47) with runners in scoring position.

Trey Mancini leads the majors with a .436 average (17-for-39) with runners in scoring position.

Reliever Darren O'Day remains on track to come off the disabled list Friday afternoon.

The Orioles announced that they signed outfielder Lamar Smith, their fifth-round draft pick out of Seven Lakes High School in Texas. They've now signed 28 of their picks.
