Scott returns from injured list (plus other notes)

The Orioles reinstated left-hander Tanner Scott from the injured list this afternoon and optioned southpaw Alexander Wells to Triple-A Norfolk.

Scott has recovered from a sprained left knee and convinced the club that he was ready yesterday after a bullpen session.

Rule 5 pick Tyler Wells is expected to be reinstated within a day or two after yesterday's simulated inning.

Alexander Wells hops back on the shuttle after allowing a run and three hits last night in the ninth inning. He can return to Norfolk's rotation.

Cedric Mullins will try to extend his hitting streak to 18 games tonight and the Orioles will attempt to end a six-game losing streak.

Mullins' streak is the longest by an Oriole since Anthony Santander hit safely in 18 straight in August 2020. He's scored a run in a career-high eight consecutive games, tied with Trey Mancini for the most on the club this season.

Santander is 12-for-28 with two doubles, three homers and five runs scored in seven games this month. He's healthy again and manager Brandon Hyde cited it as the main reason for the turnaround.

Santander-HR-Swing-White-Sidebar.jpg"The bat speed is different because he has his legs underneath him and a better place to hit from. I felt like a lot of the year he was kind of late, laboring to get the bat through (the zone) and right now he's swinging the bat with the bat speed that we've seen in the past and getting to fastballs," Hyde said.

"Tony's got a year and a half, played pretty regularly the last year-plus. Still really early in his career. Got banged up a little bit this year early, was on the IL, had kind of a tough time recovering from that ankle and now he's swinging the bat better. I think at the end of the year, then the front office will evaluate, but right now I'd like to see him finish strong and like we're seeing tonight for me and really the past week, he's swung the bat a lot like last year. And hopefully he can have a good last couple of months."

Finishing strong is important to Santander, but so is avoiding another trip to the injured list. Another September shutdown, "because that way I can help the team," he said.

Matt Harvey is pitching for the first time since leaving his Aug. 4 start in New York with a sore right knee. He hadn't allowed a run in 21 1/3 consecutive innings before the Yankees scored twice in the fourth.

Harvey made a July 30 start at Comerica Park and shut out the Tigers on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. He's allowed three runs and 22 hits in 13 2/3 innings.

DJ Stewart's home run last night was his 100th career hit. It also snapped an 0-for-14 streak.

The Orioles have homered in 10 straight home games, their longest single-season streak since doing it in 12 straight in 2016. They homered in 17 games in a row from Sept. 6, 2019-Aug. 2, 2020.

Orioles pitchers have surrendered nine or more runs in six consecutive games, the longest streak in club history and longest in the majors since the Royals in 2002. The record is seven by the 1901 New York Giants and 2000 Mariners.

The Orioles are 0-24 this season when allowing at least nine runs.

Left-hander Tarik Skubal faced the Orioles on July 30 and allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. Pedro Severino homered twice. Ryan Mountcastle also homered, but he's on the seven-day concussion list.

The Tigers purchased the contract of former Oriole Renato Núñez from Triple-A Toledo. They put outfielder Akil Baddoo on the seven-day concussion injured list and outfielder Derek Hill on the 10-day IL with a left ribcage contusion. The two players collided last night in the eighth inning while chasing Santander's fly ball, with Hill holding onto it.

Jeimer Candelario hit a two-run homer off Adam Plutko last night in the eighth inning. The ball traveled 337 feet, the second shortest home run at Camden Yards in the Statcast era (since 2015) and had an expected batting average of .060.

Miguel Cabrera still needs two home runs for 500 in his career. He's 5-for-8 with two doubles against Harvey.

The Orioles haven't posted their lineup. The team photo will be taken in a few minutes in the scorching outfield.

Double-A Bowie's Grayson Rodriguez tossed five scoreless innings today against Richmond, allowing three hits, walking none and striking out eight while lowering his ERA to 2.38.

Seth Mejias-Brean hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Zach Watson hit his third home run in less than 24 hours. Johnny Rizer had three hits, including a double and home run, and three RBIs.
