Showalter ejected in second inning (Davis, Flaherty homer)

Plate umpire Angel Hernandez infuriated both managers tonight in the top of the second inning. Hernandez is in mid-game form. Chris Davis appeared to swing through an R.A. Dickey knuckleball for the first out of the inning. He dropped the bat and started running to first. However, Hernandez ruled it was foul tipped, which brought Blue Jays manager John Gibbons out of the dugout. Hernandez conferred with third base umpire Jordan Baker and changed his call, which brought Orioles manager Buck Showalter out of the dugout for a lengthy discussion. And by "discussion," I mean Showalter shouted and Hernandez listened. Finally, Hernandez had heard enough and ejected Showalter, whose face was blood-red. Showalter made a gesture that basically returned the ejection to Hernandez. Somewhere, Earl Weaver is smiling. Most likely, Showalter was upset that Hernandez prevented Davis from running to first base on the play. It did appear that Davis struck out, but he's got a right to try to reach safely while catcher Josh Thole retrieves the ball. This is Showalter's first ejection of the season. It's not the first time he's had issues with Hernandez, which hardly makes him unique among managers, coaches and players. If you can read lips, you figured out one of the magic words that got Showalter tossed. Bench coach John Russell took over for Showalter, and J.J. Hardy eased the transition with his 15th home run later in the inning to reduce the Blue Jays' lead to 2-1. Manny Machado gets a hit, and I frantically scroll through the notes to updates his numbers. He doesn't make it easy. Machado singled off Dickey in the first inning to increase his hit total to 104, most in the majors. Machado was 2-for-7 with two RBIs against Dickey before tonight. Machado also leads the majors with 60 hits on the road. Machado has hits in 27 of his last 30 road games, batting .376 with 16 doubles, three homers, 15 RBIs and 23 runs scored. He's also collected hits in 19 of his last 21, batting .376 (35-for-93) with 10 doubles, two homers, 11 RBIs and 16 runs scored. Adam Lind hit a two-run homer off Jason Hammel in the bottom of the first inning to give Toronto a 2-0 lead. Edwin Encarnacion blooped a two-out double to right field, the ball taking a high hop over Nick Markakis' head, and Lind followed with his 10th home run of the season. Lind is now 2-for-9 against Hammel, who's starting for the first time since June 12. Hammel threw 24 pitches in the inning. He struck out the side in the second. Hammel has allowed 10 runs in the first this season, his highest total for any inning. He's permitted nine runs in the second and nine in the third. In his eight road starts, Hammel is 6-1 with a 3.97 ERA and five quality starts. He became the fifth Orioles pitcher to win each of his first five road starts of a season since the franchise moved to Baltimore in 1954. Update: Apparently, Davis crushes knuckleballs, too. Davis followed Adam Jones' RBI single in the sixth inning with an opposite-field three-run homer to give the Orioles a 5-3 lead. Davis jumped on the first pitch, a 79 mph knuckler, for his 27th home run. Hernandez ruled it a foul tip before being overruled. I kid. Davis struck out twice against Dickey before his three-run shot, which upped his RBI total to 69. Davis has 12 homers against the Jays since the start of the 2012 season, most in the majors. The rally began with Nate McLouth's leadoff single and continued with Nick Markakis' one-out walk. Update II: Edwin Encarnacion homered into the second deck in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Ryan Flaherty led off the top of the seventh by driving a ball into the second deck in right to give the Orioles a 6-4 lead. Flaherty has three homers this season. His last one came on May 14 vs. the Padres.
