Showalter ejected in seventh (O's lose 8-4)

Orioles manager Buck Showalter didn't have to leave the dugout tonight to be ejected from the game. He apparently said enough from the railing. Showalter barked at plate umpire Larry Vanover after a high and outside pitch to leadoff hitter Nick Markakis was called a strike in the bottom of the seventh inning. Vanover turned to the dugout and tossed Showalter, who rushed onto the field to pick up the argument. It's the second ejection for Showalter this season, the other coming on June 21 in Toronto, and the 26th of his career. Showalter was red-faced as he screamed at Vanover, and the crowd erupted. Vanover stared straight ahead and Showalter got in the final words and walked briskly to the dugout and down the tunnel. Before the game, Showalter praised the last two umpiring crews who worked this homestand. His opinion of Vanover may have changed. The Orioles were held to two hits, both home runs, before the ejection. Markakis singled and Adam Jones doubled, and Charlie Furbush replaced starter Erasmo Ramirez. Chris Davis lifted a sacrifice fly to left field for his 102nd RBI of the season, and Matt Wieters singled to score Jones and reduce the Mariners' lead to 6-4. Wieters has homered, singled and driven in two runs tonight after being 0-for-25. It's his first multi-RBI game since July 24. Wieters also stole his second base this season, the other May 26 in Toronto, but Ryan Flaherty grounded out to end the inning. Perhaps the ejection served as a wake-up call for the Orioles. Update: The Mariners failed to score in the top of the eighth eighth despite a walk and two singles off Brian Matusz. Raul Ibanez drilled a ball off the right field fence, but Alexi Casilla's relay cut down Nick Franklin at the plate and Wieters fired to first to nab Ibanez, who had to retreat while Kendry Morales clogged the basepath. Wieters made an outstanding play, fielding Casilla's throw on one hop and slapping the tag, then running toward Morales and throwing behind Ibanez. I'm fairly confident that Showalter will mention it after the game. The Orioles stranded two runners in the bottom of the eighth and continue to trail 6-4. Manny Machado collected his first double since July 6, and his 40th this season. It's the 15th season of 40-plus doubles by a player 21 or younger since 1901. The record is 54 by Alex Rodriguez in 1996. Update II: Michael Saunders hit his second home run of the night, a two-run shot off Darren O'Day in the top of the ninth inning, and the Orioles lost to the Mariners 8-4 at Camden Yards on the three-year anniversary of Showalter's first game as manager. Saunders has five career multi-homer games. He's homered three times in the last two nights. The Orioles are 61-50 on the season and 4-4 on this homestand.
