Orioles manager Buck Showalter is included among the finalists named tonight for the annual Baseball Writers Association of America awards. The candidates were revealed on MLB Network.
Showalter joins the Angels' Mike Scioscia and the Royals' Ned Yost as the three American League finalists after leading the Orioles to 96 wins in the regular season and their first division title and appearance in the Championship Series since 1997. He won the award with the Yankees in 1994 and the Rangers in 2004.
If the 10-year BBWAA pattern holds, he's going to win it again in 2014.
Ballots were submitted prior to the playoffs.
Showalter guided the Orioles to their first winning record and playoff berth in 15 years in 2012, but he finished second to the Athletics' Bob Melvin in the BBWAA voting.
An Oriole hasn't been named Manager of the Year since Davey Johnson in 1997.
In case you need a reminder, the BBWAA award winners will be announced as follows:
Nov. 10 - AL and NL Rookie of the Year Award
Nov. 11 - AL and NL Manager of the Year Award
Nov. 12 - AL and NL Cy Young Award
Nov. 13 - AL and NL Most Valuable Player Award
Showalter finished as runner-up to Scioscia last month for the Sporting News Manager of the Year award. He received five votes, one fewer than Scioscia. Showalter won it in 2012.
Ballots were submitted by managers in both leagues prior to the postseason.
Update: Nelson Cruz and Adam Jones weren't included among the finalists for AL MVP, though they figure to have received votes.
