Showalter on Aceves and Machado

SARASOTA, Fla. - Jimmy Paredes, claimed off waivers from the Marlins yesterday, hasn't reported to camp and we may not see him here. Paredes is a candidate to come off the 40-man roster once the Orioles officially sign pitcher Suk-min Yoon. He could be claimed by another team or outrighted and sent to the minor league camp at Twin Lakes Park. We'll see. If the Orioles wait much longer to confirm the Yoon signing, his press conference may be pushed back to Tuesday. Most of the position players reported early. We haven't seen Delmon Young, Alex Gonzalez, Francisco Peguero, Xavier Paul and Ivan DeJesus, Jr. Manager Buck Showalter was impressed by Alfredo Aceves' bullpen session. "He's excited. He's ready to be here," Showalter said. "Good thing with Alfredo is he was pitching about a week ago. Not even that. If anything, we may have slowed him down a little bit. But you could tell by him throwing today, you can tell the guys who have been in winter ball." Showalter didn't see much of Manny Machado's workout today. "I stayed way far away," he said, grinning. While driving by in his golf cart, Showalter stopped to ask Machado whether he was nervous. "No," Machado replied. "Why should I be?" Machado took batting practice and fielded ground balls at third base. He hopes to be cleared to play in games in mid-March. "He came in to say hello this morning with four or five coaches there and you could tell he was looking for an exit, somewhere to get out of there," Showalter said. "I said, 'You notice that nobody in here is asking how you're feeling or what stage you're at,' and he said, 'Yeah, that was beautiful.'" Machado still isn't allowed to run the bases or slide. The team would prefer limited side-to-side movements at third base. Otherwise, he's pretty much full-go - but still unsure whether he'll be ready on opening day. Machado just met with the media. More to come.
