Showalter on injuries and Schoop's All-Star honor (O's down 8-1)

MILWAUKEE - Chris Davis showed up at Miller Park today with a "good face," as manager Buck Showalter called it. And he wasn't referring to Davis' mustache, the latest selection on the first baseman's facial hair playlist.

Davis threw yesterday and woke up this morning without any discomfort in his right side. He was scheduled to take batting practice this afternoon, giving the Orioles another indication of how the oblique is healing.

"So far, so good," Showalter said.

"Usually, you can tell in their face how they're feeling. You're always a little apprehensive. It's been a while. First time you start swinging and see, 'Is that going to hurt, is this going to hurt?' I'm sure he'll start out slow and go from there."

Catcher Welington Castillo lost half a toenail after fouling a ball off his foot, but he's in today's lineup.

"Pretty sore yesterday, but he seems to be OK today," Showalter said. "You kind of lose sight. We see somebody foul a ball off their ankle or their shin or their foot and we just kind of go, he shakes it off and he plays. Just go take a sledgehammer and hammer your toe about 30 times a year. It's amazing to me."

Pitcher Chris Tillman remains listed as Wednesday night's starter, but he's with wife Christina today while awaiting the birth of their first child.

"I'm trying to leave him alone," Showalter said. "It's a long day for he and his wife today. At some point he'll let us know or we'll find out what's going on with him."

First baseman Trey Mancini has a stye, but it's not bothering him to play.

"It's just something that he's dealing with," Showalter said.

Left-hander Donnie Hart split a fingernail yesterday, but he's available.

"Those are things we don't mention three-fourths of the time, right?" Showalter said.

Mike Wright started a throwing program today in Sarasota. He's on the disabled list with right shoulder bursitis.

Ryan Flaherty continues to do shoulder exercises, but there's nothing new to report in the way of baseball activities. Flaherty would seem to be a candidate for the 60-day disabled list when the Orioles need a 40-man spot Wednesday for closer Zach Britton, unless they believe that their utility infielder will be able to move quickly once he's cleared again to throw.

The club is discussing how to open a spot on the 40-man. First baseman/outfielder David Washington would appear to be on the roster bubble, but he's not alone.

Britton is still scheduled to pitch tonight at Single-A Frederick.

The Orioles selected Frederick left-hander Keegan Akin as their Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June, and Double-A Bowie outfielder Austin Hays as their Player of the Month.

Akin went 3-1 with a 0.90 ERA in five starts. Promoted to the Baysox June 22, Hays batted .364 in 18 games with six doubles, six home runs, 15 RBIs, a .675 slugging percentage and a 1.066 OPS.

Showalter expressed his joy at second baseman Jonathan Schoop's selection to the American League All-Star team.

"Are you kidding me?" Showalter said. "It's like I say all the time to Dan (Duquette) and them, you deliver so much bad news - 'You're going down,' this guy's this and that and whatever - so to be able to ... I called all the coaches together and let Bobby (Dickerson) tell him. Bobby got choked up.

"Bobby's been with him since he was 16 or 17. All along the way. It was a lot of fun watching him and Jon react together. Bobby met him up in the parking lot. He thought he was being traded. The look on his face. And you didn't want to prolong it. That would have been cruel, so you just want to kind of get to it. We called the guys together and announced it, so he got to share that in front of everybody. He said if he doesn't get a hit today, he's not going."

Schoop took the embargo on the announcement to the extreme.

"Jon's such a family-oriented guy," Showalter said. "It's funny, I told him, 'You can't tell anybody, you can't tell anybody.' I expected him to tell his family, but he didn't. I was walking down for the presser after the game and I saw all his family out there and I said something to his wife. I said, 'So, where are you all spending the All-Star break?' And she said, 'I don't know. Maybe here or Miami with his family.' It hit me that he hadn't told her.

"He told his father afterward, but told his father not to tell anybody, so when Bobby or somebody talked to his father, he wouldn't tell that person. 'I don't know, I don't know.' Like they were going to take it back if he told somebody."

Showalter noticed last night on the flight to Milwaukee that the selections were airing on ESPN, and he instructed Dickerson to walk to the back of the plane and alert Schoop.

"Bobby went back there and there's about four or five of them already crowded around the TV," Showalter. "I started to go back there, but that was their moment. I just kind of lived it through Bobby's eyes.

"You get emotional about those things. It's like Manny (Machado). You go through the ups and downs and you see the one step back, two steps forward over the course of time in the minor leagues. Jon's very deserving, very deserving."

Update: Wade Miley threw 44 pitches in the bottom of the first inning and the Orioles trail 4-0.

Miley gave up four hits and walked two batters. Five straight Brewers reached base. Jimmy Yacabonis began to warm in the bullpen.

Update II: Miley lasted only 1 2/3 innings, his shortest non-injury start of the season, and was charged with seven runs and seven hits, with two walks, two strikeouts and a hit batter. He threw 67 pitches, 37 for strikes.

The Orioles scored once in the third inning on Rubén Tejada's leadoff single and two-base error by right fielder Domingo Santana, and Yacabonis' grounder. Yacabonis was batting for the first time in the majors.

Update III: The Orioles are down 8-1 after the Brewers scored again in the bottom of the third on Orlando Arcia's leadoff single and an infield hit by pitcher Brent Suter.

Arcia slid past third base and raced home, got caught in a rundown and scored when Manny Machado made a wide throw and Tejada and catcher Welington Castillo got tangled up on the play. Because that's how it's going for the Orioles today.
