The Orioles didn't make any roster moves today. Chris Dickerson avoided the disabled list. No decision has been made whether to option Wei-Yin Chen and give him a start in the minors during the break. And Cuban outfielder Henry Urrutia stayed at Triple-A Norfolk.
Urrutia started in left field today for the Tides and went 1-for-4 with an RBI single. He's batting .357 in 14 games since his promotion from Double-A Bowie. It doesn't appear that the Orioles have any immediate plans to select his contract, but it's going to happen at some point.
"I think he's getting closer to being an option," said manager Buck Showalter. "I think he's got 50-plus plate appearances at Triple-A. He's certainly done his part.
"The thing I've been happy to hear about is his defensive play has been good. He's a long-legged guy. He's one of those types of guys who takes up a lot of the batter's box when he puts his body in it. R.J. (Ron Johnson) said he's one of those guys where you expect him to get a hit. He hits a lot of sharp top-spin ground balls. Kind of skidding. He's been swinging it well.
"I'm proud of him. He's had a lot thrown at him new in his life, starting from getting out of Haiti to getting here and getting acclimated to America and a lot of different things we take for granted. It's been a long, patient road for him."
Manny Machado's triple last night was the Orioles' sixth three-bagger this season. They're on pace for 11, which would tie the franchise record for their lowest total, set in 1981 (strike-shortened season) and 1998.
Machado's 126 hits this season trail Miguel Cabrera by three for the major league lead. He leads the majors with 14 games with three hits or more.
Machado is headed to the All-Star Game as a reserve. Showalter was asked today whether he's amazed that all three of his starters - Adam Jones, Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy - were acquired via trade.
His response was classic.
"Well, Manny was kind of a trade, too," Showalter said. "We traded our season the year before for the ability to draft him.
"Pretty good trade, wasn't it? Easy for me to say."
