Showalter on Wieters starting three in a row (Orioles win in 12)

TORONTO - Orioles catcher Matt Wieters recently missed six games with a right foot injury. Today, he is catching for the third time in three games in this series.

Manager Buck Showalter said before today's game that is not because of any physical issue with backup Caleb Joseph, who is fine to play.

"He (Wieters) feels good," Showalter said. "We thought about him (being off) yesterday, but he felt really good yesterday and wanted to catch. We've got an off-day tomorrow. Try to get Zach (Britton) and Darren (O'Day) in there today. Was hoping I'd have a lot of opportunities to use them them for two or three days here, but it really hasn't presented itself."

Wieters said recently his foot injury was no excuse if he missed any pitches that became wild pitches. Is Wieters' foot getting better as he gets further removed from the original injury?

"Matt is not the type of guy that is going to broadcast stuff and let you know every ounce of discomfort," Showalter said. "Just like everybody out there. I'm sure Toronto has some. No, we obviously wouldn't put him out there if we thought it was a challenge for him. Some of the pitches were so far out of the zone, I don't know if anyone could have caught them."

Jays score first: For the first time in this series, Toronto was the first to score, taking a 1-0 lead in the last of the second off Chris Tillman. Russell Martin doubled with one out and went to third on Kevin Pillar's high-chop infield single to third that he just beat out. Devon Travis then just beat out a potential inning ending 6-4-3 double play ball. He was safe at first as a run scored.

In their first four at-bats against right-hander Aaron Sanchez, the O's could muster just two singles. Sanchez retired the first 12 Baltimore batters on 49 pitches.

In the last of the fourth, Troy Tulowitzki led off with a long homer down the left field line for a 2-0 lead. Tulowitzki hit a first-pitch changeup 433 feet for his 18th homer and a two-run edge. The Orioles have scored just two runs their last 18 innings at Rogers Centre this weekend through the top of the fourth.

O's still have not scored: The Orioles were shut out through the sixth today by Sanchez on just three hits, going 3-for-20. They are scoreless in their last 13 innings in the series. They had a shot with two on and two outs in the fifth, but Sanchez got J.J. Hardy to pop out on a 2-0 pitch to end that threat. Sanchez needed just 73 pitches to clear six innings.

O's tie it: The Orioles turned a walk and a hit into two runs to tie the game in the seventh. Chris Davis drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a scorched line drive double to left by Mark Trumbo. The hit past third baseman Josh Donaldson had an exit velocity of 111 mph.

Then, the O's scored both runners on outs, as a Pedro Alvarez groundout advanced both runners for a 2-1 game and a Wieters sac fly tied it 2-2.

Darren O'Day came on for Tillman to get the last out of the last of the sixth. Tillman went 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and two runs on 111 pitches. O's starters have allowed 13 runs in 13 innings in the series.

Orioles win in extras: It was hard-earned and took a while, but the Orioles finally got a win this weekend at Rogers Centre. Jonathan Schoop's RBI single in the 12th broke a tie and Adam Jones later hit a three-run shot as they beat Toronto 6-2 in front of another sellout crowd of 46,792.

With the win, the Orioles reclaimed first-place in the American League East at 59-45 and moved a half-game ahead of Toronto, which is 59-46.

After the teams had been tied 2-2 since the seventh, lefty Franklin Morales came on in the 12th for Toronto and walked Alvarez on four pitches. Then, he balked and Alvarez advanced to second. One out later, Schoop's single to left on a 2-1 pitch broke the 2-2 tie and was his 59th RBI. After Morales walked Hardy, right-hander Jesse Chavez came on.

Jones blasted a first-pitch changeup from Chavez out to left for his 20th homer and a 6-2 lead. It was a four-run 12th for the Orioles, who had scored three runs in the previous two games to that point. The Orioles also ended a run of 19 straight games scoring five or fewer runs.

The Orioles snapped both a five-game losing streak and a five-game Rogers Centre losing skid, improving to 2-5 in here this season. Mychal Givens got the win as the O's bullpen pitched 6 1/3 scoreless in relief of Tillman.

Now, the Orioles head home for an off-day Monday before Texas plays at Camden Yards for a three-game set beginning Tuesday.
