Showalter updates injuries and more (O's win 6-4)

PHILADELPHIA - Orioles manager Buck Showalter started his pregame media session today at Citizens Bank Park by removing a piece of paper from his pocket and rattling off the injury updates.

Showalter decided to give center fielder Adam Jones at least one more day off. Jones is mostly bothered by a sore right shoulder.

"Talking to the doctors and MRI and everything, I'm really wanting to get him back to 100 percent," Showalter said. "I think it's a good little ... with all the nagging things he has - the ankle, the shin, the toe and now this, the schedule gives us a chance to give him a couple days. Maybe three. I don't know. We'll see how it feels.

"I think I'm more concerned, not concerned, about his shoulder throwing-wise. I want to make sure that's OK. The doctor said if we can give him a couple days and let it get completely back ... So maybe two, maybe three days. I'm hoping that's what it is. No more than that.

"I haven't even talked to him today since he's been out to see how much better it is. I'll have a better idea post-BP, whether we're looking for another day or not. But I could use him off the bench if I had to."

It's an ample bench with an extra position player on the roster and no designated hitter in a National League ballpark.

"I'm not used to having six guys on the bench," Showalter said. "It's like the old days here, when you had to worry about keeping people happy. A lot of people unhappy there. That was weird writing it out today."

Here are more injury updates:

* Single-A Delmarva catcher catcher Jonah Heim is wearing a walking boot for the next two weeks due to a foot injury. "Trying to stay away from surgery. I think they might be able to," Showalter said.

* Triple-A Norfolk right-hander Steve Johnson hasn't been able to pitch due to soreness on his side. "Steve Johnson had a MRI," Showalter said. "They found no tear, but some edema (swelling) there, so I think he's kind of day-to-day. He had some oblique soreness. So it's not a tear."

* Delmarva third baseman Jomar Reyes has a sprained right thumb. "In a cast for a couple weeks," Showalter said.

* Double-A Bowie pitcher Dylan Bundy is waiting to undergo an MRI arthrogram on his right shoulder "to see if he's progressed to the point where he's ready to go. I'm not sure what the day is," Showalter said.

Chris Tillman is starting Sunday in Toronto before an off-day. Showalter decided not to hold back Tillman until the Red Sox series that begins Tuesday at Fenway Park.

Tillman is 4-9 with a 5.23 ERA in nine career starts against the Blue Jays and 2-5 with a 6.54 ERA in nine starts at Rogers Centre.

"Too many days, plus he's been on a decent roll," Showalter said. "He feels good and he's a guy that's shown he can take the load. The problem was if not him, then who?"

Agent Scott Boras was on the field during batting practice. He represents the Phillies' top pick, who signed today.

Boras chatted with one of his clients, Chris Davis, during BP. I'm not sure whether he crossed paths with Showalter.

Showalter said he didn't talk to left-hander Wei-Yin Chen, another Boras client, about the two tweets that appeared last night on the left-hander's account. Chen expressed his disappointment in being optioned to Single-A Frederick for one start.

"I talked to him yesterday for about 20 minutes. He seemed real good with it. He knows he gets a nice return," Showalter said.

"I think I know our player pretty well. He's going to come back and pitch well for us. He's going to miss one start, like a lot of our guys have done. I think just about everybody has."

Chen avoids pitching against the Blue Jays and Red Sox before returning on June 26 against the Indians at Camden Yards. He made two starts at Fenway Park in 2013 and allowed 11 runs and 19 hits in 9 1/3 innings. He allowed five unearned runs, walked five and hit a batter in 4 1/3 innings in his only appearance in Boston this season.

The Orioles assigned infielder Corban Joseph, Caleb's younger brother, to Double-A Bowie.

The Orioles announced that they signed 14 additional selections from the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, raising their total to 17: right-hander Ryan Meisinger (11), left-hander Robert Strader (12), left-hander Nick Vespi (18), left-hander Will Dennis (23), third baseman Kirvin Moesquit (24), right-hander Rocky McCord (26), right-hander Andrew Elliott (30), left-hander Will Shepley (31), right-hander Steven Klimek (33), right-hander Kory Groves (34), left-hander Xavier Borde (36), second baseman Jack Graham (38), utility man Frank Crinella (39) and right-hander Michael Costello (40).

Update: Chris Parmelee homered for the third time in two games to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Phillies quickly tied the score in the bottom half on Chase Utley's stolen base, Matt Wieters' throwing error and Ubaldo Jimenez's wild pitch.

Parmelee had 24 home runs in 812 at-bats with the Twins. He has three home runs in seven at-bats with the Orioles.

Update II: The Orioles sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs in the fourth inning to lead 5-1.

All four runs were unearned after Travis Snider reached on shortstop Freddy Galvis' error. Matt Wieters had an RBI single, David Lough had a two-run double with two outs and J.J. Hardy raced home on Jimenez's swinging bunt single - his first hit since 2011.

Hardy extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Lough is 8-for-13 lifetime against Correia.

Update III: Jimenez struck out the side after the Phillies put runners on second and third with no outs in the fourth, and Travis Snider led off the fifth with a home run. Orioles 6, Phillies 1

Snider has two home runs as an Oriole, the other coming on April 12.

The Orioles have hit 10 home runs in the last 13 innings.

Update IV: The Phillies woke up, scoring three runs in the seventh to trail 6-4.

Chaz Roe replaced Jimenez and retired Chase Utley on a bouncer to the mound to strand Ben Revere at third base.

Freddy Galvis hit a three-run homer off Jimenez to make the game close.

Jimenez allowed four runs (three earned) and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings, with no walks, eight strikeouts and a wild pitch. He threw 98 pitches, 63 for strikes.

Jimenez hasn't issued a walk in two starts this season. He walked a batter in every start in 2014.

Update V: The Orioles defeated the Phillies 6-4 to move three games above .500 for the first time this season.

Zach Britton recorded his 18th save after the Phillies put runners on the corners with one out, and the Orioles won their third game in a row - all against the Phillies. They've also won nine of 10 and 11 of 13.

The Orioles improved to 3-9 in two-run games.
