Orioles manager Buck Showalter provided details on pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez's ankle injury and pending trip to the disabled list.
Jimenez is eligible to return July 23 in Anaheim.
"He rolled his ankle," Showalter said. "The way I understand it, he stepped in a hole in the parking lot. We were looking at it today and it's pretty puffy, taped up. Tried to take a work day yesterday. We were hoping it would resolve somewhat today. Did not. And he's not going to be able to start tomorrow. So, we're probably going to DL him and backdate it and have him ready post All-Star break."
Kevin Gausman can be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk before the minimum 10 days after being sent down because he's replacing an injured player.
"(Gausman) was scheduled to pitch Sunday and he pitched last Sunday. Keep in mind you can't backdate it all the way back to the day Jimenez pitched because if you bring back a guy within the 10 days, which we're doing with Kevin Gausman, you don't get the benefit of backdating all the way to the last day that he pitched. I think we're going to lose two days. I think Jimenez's eligibility is the sixth day after the break."
Showalter said Jimenez rolled the ankle on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the parking lot at Jimenez's apartment, not the ballpark.
"I'm not going to get into exactly how he explained it," Showalter said. "He had it in 2012. The only reason I asked him that is I wanted to know how quickly it healed. Anybody who's rolled their ankle, they know once you do it once, it kind of falls on a similar pattern. And he did it pitching. They shut him down the last two or three starts in 2012.
"It's real sore today. Richie (Bancells) and them do a thing, X out of 10. It's eight out of 10, so he's got a pretty significant ankle there.
"I haven't gotten it completely. I know it's not some cloak and dagger where I'm concerned. He turned it in a parking lot pretty significantly. Stepped awkwardly in a hole or something. I can find out exactly what time of day and what depth of the hole and if there was a hole. Was he getting in or out of the car. Whatever. It is what it is. It's pretty... you can tell.
"I understand how things work with people who make a living of making light of things like this, but he's pretty frustrated by it. I'd a lot rather have him healthy and pitching. And I can tell you, if it wasn't for the All-Star break, we might wait a couple days. But it's also the same ankle as 2012, and looking how long that took... With ankles, I've learned that you kind of take a look at the history with them. It's a lot weaker every time you put it in peril."
Jimenez is shut down for at least the next few days.
"There's not a whole lot going to go on physically for a few days until all the swelling gets out of there," Showalter said. "He's got it wrapped up pretty good right now trying to compress the swelling."
The club hasn't decided whether Jimenez would require a rehab start in the minors before being activated.
"Maybe," Showalter said. "I wouldn't commit one way or the other yet. Maybe.
"This all started coming together about 2:30 today, so we've been trying to scramble and make sure we knew when Gaus had his work day and the moving parts of that, but I think we're leaning toward (Chris) Tillman pitching tomorrow because Gaus had a light work day yesterday. But don't hold me to that. Something could come up in the meantime."
As for what happens to Gausman beyond the weekend, Showalter said, "I think the plan is Gaus to pitch the Sunday after the break. Every time I make plans in advance, like we finally nailed down everything... I told Dave (Wallace) I'm never going to do that again. So now we're ... not shuffling. I think everything kind of still fits about where it should. This is provided Ubaldo is able to go the sixth day. It's pretty deep in there."
Showalter will attend Monday morning's game at Bowie so he can watch Bud Norris and Mychal Givens, who's expected to pitch in relief.
Norris chose Bowie over Single-A Frederick and short-season Single-A Aberdeen.
"We and he wanted to best competition, which he's got," Showalter said. "It's one of those things you let them pick, but you really hope they pick that.
"It's an 11 a.m. game, and then he lives out in the San Francisco area, so that works out well to meet us out there. I think he'll join us Saturday."
Showalter added that the Orioles could bring up another player Saturday.
