Solis placed on the disabled list with elbow discomfort

Double-A Harrisburg Senators left-hander Sammy Solis is back on the disabled list, this time with elbow discomfort, a club source confirmed to MASNSports.com.

Solis missed the beginning of the season due to a back issue. He made one start for the Senators, but lasted only 3 1/3 innings, giving up nine runs, eight of them earned.

He was scheduled to pitch late last week, but was scratched. On Tuesday, the Senators announced Solis was placed on the disabled list.

Solis recovered from Tommy John surgery performed March 6, 2012 and, alongside Matt Purke, is considered the top left-handed starting pitcher in the Nationals system. Obviously, it is concerning that Solis is out with elbow discomfort only 25 months removed from major surgery.

Purke underwent Tommy John surgery himself last month and is recovering.

On a positive note, top pitching prospect Lucas Giolito returned to start Tuesday's game for the low Single-A Hagerstown Suns against Delmarva. It marked his first appearance since May 11. He had been on the shelf because the organization wanted to monitor his innings totals in his first full professional season since his return from Tommy John surgery.

Giolito pitched well. In three innings, Giolito allowed three hits, no runs, no walks and struck out five. He induced two grounders and a fly out, facing 12 batters. He was on an innings limit and pitch limit in the planned progression, so once he reached three innings, his night was done.

The organization also reinstated Nick Pivetta on Tuesday. He replaced Giolito in the fourth inning.
