Some post-game notes and quotes after the Orioles beat the Yankees

The Orioles started a six-game homestand with a stirring 5-4 win over the Yankees that featured Alfredo Simon's first Major League save, a Cesar Izturis 3-RBI night and a combined 0 for 10 evening from Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. Back-to-back firsts: Sunday Cla Meredith got his first Major League save in his 271st big league appearance. Tonight, Simon got his first in his 7th career big league outing. Maybe now we can get on a little bit of a roll here." Winning is fun: After going 2-16 through the first 18 games, the O's are now 2-0 over two games. Last year they had seven total combined wins vs. Boston and NY. Now they are 2-2 in a 12-game stretch vs. that duo. Adam Jones on slamming his bat to the ground after striking out in the sixth: "Frustration, something I hardly ever do. I'm sure my mom saw that and will tell me I'm wrong, which I was. That's out of character for me." Matt Wieters went 0 for 2 with two walks to snap his eight-game hitting streak, one shy of his career high. Ty Wigginton reached base three times in four plate appearances and has now reached in 12 of his last 19 plate appearances. The bottom three in the lineup, Hughes, Reimold and Izturis had all the RBI on the night. Koji pitched: Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless first inning for Bowie vs. Erie on an injury-rehab assignment. He threw 11 of 15 pitches for strikes and gave up one hit and had one strikeout. The Yankees have now lost four of the last five games and are 12-7 on the year and 7-6 on the road. They are 3-4 on their current road trip and 4-3 in games vs. the AL East. The Orioles are 4-3 when they score four runs or more, but are 0-13 when scoring fewer than four runs. Kevin Millwood did not get a decision and gave up 2 ER over 5 1/3 innings. The O's have scored just nine runs when he has been in the game in five starts. In his last three outings he has thrown 115, 112 and 112 pitches. Wednesday at 7:05, Jeremy Guthrie (0-2, 3.46) pitches vs. New York's CC Sabathia (2-1, 3.00). Guthrie beat NY on Opening Day in 2009, but then lost his last four starts vs. the Yankees. He is 3-6, 4.92 in 11 career starts vs. NY. Sabathia is 9-1, 2.55 in 14 career starts vs. Baltimore. That's his most wins vs. any AL East opponent and how lowest ERA against any AL foe. He is 4-0, 1.50 in his last four starts vs. the Birds.
