Struck by two line drives, Miley exits in first inning (O's up 2-0)

Two nights after the Orioles lost a starting pitcher who was ejected after recording just three outs, they lost their starter tonight after just two outs.

Left-hander Wade Miley was hit twice by line drives in a three-pitch span in the top of the first tonight against the Chicago White Sox. It was just Wednesday night in Boston when Kevin Gausman was ejected pitching to the first batter he faced in the second inning. This time, Miley was knocked out after being drilled by back-to-back batters.

Right-hander Gabriel Ynoa, recalled from Triple-A Norfolk yesterday, took over for Miley and got a popup to strand two runners in a scoreless first inning. Acquired from the New York Mets on Feb. 10 for cash considerations, Ynoa is making his O's debut tonight. Last season he went 1-0 with a 6.38 ERA in 10 games for New York.

Shortstop Tim Anderson led off the game and singled to center, but Miley got Melky Cabrera to bounce into a 5-4-3 double play.

Manager Buck Showalter, athletic trainer Brian Ebel and pitching coach Roger McDowell rushed to the mound. After a few warmup tosses and a long discussion near the mound, Miley stayed in the game.

But on a 1-0 pitch to the American League's leading hitter, White Sox designated hitter Avasaíl García, Miley got smoked again. This one hit him in the left thigh area and knocked him to the ground at 102.1 mph off García's bat. Both liners went for singles to put runners at first and second.

This time, Miley walked off into the Orioles dugout. He began the day with a record of 1-1 and his 2.32 ERA ranks 10th in the American League. But just 12 pitches into his night, he leaves this start in the opener of a three-game series.

Ynoa came on and got third baseman Matt Davidson to pop out to strand two runners. Miley's final line showed 2/3 of an inning and three hits with no runs, walks or strikeouts. Eight of his 12 pitches went for strike. We should get more information on his condition after the game.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the last of the first when Miguel González hit Jonathan Schoop with the bases loaded. It followed singles by Seth Smith and Mark Trumbo sandwiched around a walk to Chris Davis.

The inning included a nice and long ovation for center fielder Adam Jones before his first at-bat of the night.

Homer drought ends: Davis had not homered over his last 18 games and had just two RBIs in that span. He ended that with a solo shot to left-center in the third for a 2-0 lead. He hit No. 4 off a González slider and it went 427 feet for his first homer since April 14.

Ynoa has done a very solid job tonight. He stranded runners at first and third to end the fifth when he struck out Abreu on a 2-2 slider to keep the lead 2-0.

Miley update: The Orioles say that Miley left the game due a left wrist contusion.

He was real good, you know: Ynoa had one stellar O's debut. He was replaced by Stefan Crichton with one on and two outs in the seventh and Crichton got out of the inning with the 2-0 lead.

Ynoa's line tonight was six innings, six hits, no runs or walks and five strikeouts. He threw 101 pitches, 69 for strikes. If the bullpen holds the lead, he'll pick up his second major league win.
