Sweet 16: Markakis extends hit streak in win over the Reds
Nick Markakis came up with three hits in five at bats in Sunday's win over Cincinnati. His average is at its highest point since April 9 and he now has a 16-game hitting streak.
Markakis is batting .405 (30-for-74) during the streak, which is one off his career best. The batting streak has raised his average from .236 to .277.
"I feel like I'm getting there," he said. "Just gotta take it day-by-day and try to continue what I'm doing. Get on base and get big hits when you need them.
"Being at the top of the order, it's real important (for me to get my offense going). You have a responsibility where you are in the order and I am trying my best to do what I can to help out this team."
Markakis, who went 6-for-14 with a homer and four RBIs in this series, said he could not cite any specific adjustments he had made to get his bat going.
"No. Just getting comfortable up there and getting a good pitch to hit," he said.
He does feel the Orioles are starting to get their lineup going and the club has now had 11 games with ten hits or more in the past 15 contests. He agreed with an assessment that there are more guys hitting well now in the O's lineup than at any point this season.
"Yeah, I'd say so," Markakis said. "It started in Washington, carried into Pittsburgh and we carried it into this series. We just have to stay on top of it. We are swinging it well and we don't need to do anything different."
After a road trip which featured six losses in nine games, getting a series win to start this homestand was pretty important.
"Any series win is big, but to do it with a team like this with the lineup they have is big," according to Markakis.
